Loose Parts Play
Madonna Catholic has partnered with Ever Active Schools to create a loose parts play program in our school!
Play is hugely important in almost every area of children’s lives. It improves social skills and creativity while supporting emotional resilience, physical development, confidence, and learning. Loose parts play is a type of play that supports invention, divergent thinking, problem-solving and offers a sense of wonder to children.
Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways.
When children play this way, they…
- Figure out things for themselves.
- Learn how to take healthy risks.
- Find innovative ways to think about the world and how it works, based on their own self-led, intrinsically motivated interests.
- Practice necessary skills such as overcoming obstacles, creative problem solving (on their own or with other children), communicating their feelings effectively with others, and working with those who may have different points of view.
- Experience the joy of self-discovery, the thrill of being able to pursue their own creative ideas without the fear of failure that usually arises when there is one, predetermined way to be “right” or to “win”.
As our children begin their journey into Loose Parts Play this school year and you would like to contribute, we are looking to gather certain materials.
We NEED:
Spools, Pool Noodles, Rope, Tubing, plastic crates and Wood. Please make sure there are no sharp edges.
Here is a video that gives you an example of loose parts.

THANK YOU FIRST BOOK CANADA FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATION!
Allie Norrie is our Family Wellness Worker Support (FWW)
Students can visit with FWW’s for a lot of different reasons, some examples are:
if you are having a lot of feelings or intense feelings and need someone to talk to try to help you cope with them
if you are having trouble with friendships or making new friends
if you worry a lot
if you have trouble sitting still in class or focusing on your schoolwork
An FWW also supports families. Some reasons that parents or guardians may want to connect with me are if they are:
struggling with your child’s emotions or behavior and want support
wanting someone to talk to
looking for resources to support your child’s or your own mental health
struggling financially and need support with community resources

Sacramental Preparation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish
Is your child in grade 2 or higher? Have they received their First Holy Communion
1. Our parish offers sacramental preparation, to support and encourage parents in their role as the first teachers and models of the faith. This includes parent orientation, classes/retreats for parents and children to attend together, as well as scheduling dedicated study time together at home, prior to reception of the Sacraments. (Workbook and study materials are included with your registration.) 2. At OLPH First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are usually offered when a child is grade 2 or older. First Communion means that this will be the first time that a child is participating “fully” in the Mass by receiving the Eucharist. Just like we begin every Mass by praying the Penitential (Act of Contrition) to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, First Reconciliation must be completed prior to First Holy Communion.Madonna Catholic School
