Mindful Games: How to Make Learning Mindfulness in the Classroom Fun and Engaging

November 16-17, Halverson Center for Education - Professional Learning Center

In this course, participants will discover explanations of what mindfulness is and how it can help children socially, cognitively, and behaviorally. Participants will explore practices of mindfulness such as breathing, guided meditation, sensory work, and body movement. Through the text required for the class, Mindful Games: Sharing Mindfulness & Meditation with Kids, Families, & Teens and Mindfulness Activity Cards: 55 Ways to Share Mindfulness & Meditation with Kids, Families & Teens, participants will further explore activities and games of how to make mindfulness and meditation fun and engaging in their own classrooms. Participants will document the process of adapting these techniques to their classrooms through the use of Mindfulness Moments Daily Journal by Molly Schreiber.

Upcoming Computer Science Planning Workshops

Iowa’s AEAs are equipped to support districts in preparing their computer science plans to meet the requirements of the Future Ready Iowa Act, House File 2629, which requires all districts to have a computer science plan in place by July 1, 2022.

The Strategic CSforALL Resource & Implementation Planning Tool (SCRIPT) is a framework to guide teams of district administrators, school leaders, and educators through a series of collaborative visioning, self-assessment, and goal-setting exercises to create or expand upon a computer science education implementation plan for their students. Over 20 districts throughout Green Hills AEA have already taken our one-day SCRIPT workshop and have found it beneficial in getting the planning process started. Due to demand, Green Hills AEA has added several more SCRIPT workshop dates this fall and winter. Here is the updated list of dates/locations.

Personalized, Competency Based CTE Collaborative

What does learning look like in a post-pandemic world? How might we leverage what we learned about more effectively meeting students’ needs in ways that are both practical and deeply meaningful? Consider blending personalized competency-based education (CBE) within career and technical education (CTE). CBE allows for students to earn credit for any time/anywhere learning, flexible pacing, validation of core competencies within CTE experiences, the development of learners’ agency, and a focus on the application of career, college, and civic-ready knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

Join a collaborative of 6-12 school leaders (including teachers and counselors), AEA and IHE partners, intermediaries, CTE program coordinators, and concurrent enrollment directors to collect and create resources and solutions to challenges that include but are not limited to:

  • personalizing authentic learner experiences,
  • validating learning and assessment beyond the walls of a school,
  • offering cross-curricular and anytime/anywhere credit
  • creating local pathways and shared partnerships with neighboring schools

Teachers - Apply for a Distance Learning Scholarship with Internet2

The Internet2's Community Anchor Program (CAP) has launched its second annual distance learning scholarship program intended to give K-12 teachers free, one-on-one distance learning programs for their classes through the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC). Iowa Communications Network is proud to be part of Internet2's CAP program.

About the Scholarship

Any teacher from a K-12 school that is connected to Internet2 via the ICN can apply to use the scholarship to pay for a one-on-one distance learning class from the CILC. Teachers can apply for the scholarship regardless of whether their school is holding in-person classes or distance learning.

To Apply, Teachers Must:

  • Teach in a school district that is connected to the ICN;
  • Visit the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration to select a distance learning class for their students to include with the application form;
  • Complete a scholarship application form. The last day to submit an application is Friday, November 19, 2021.

Iowa Environmental Health Association Scholarship Opportunity

The Iowa Environmental Health Association (IEHA), is involved in environmental and public education, reviewing existing and pending environmental health legislation and community service. They play a leading role in the development of groundwater, wastewater management and swimming pool regulations, food service personnel certification programs, and well contractor certifications. Since 2016, they have offered scholarship opportunities for students interested in pursuing career fields related to environmental health.

The scholarship program details are as follows:

  • $500 for the school year, scholarship may be renewed one time if the student is in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or above) with their respective college.
  • Scholarship monies will be paid directly to the college or university.
  • The selection committee shall consist of five (5) IEHA members. The committee shall award the scholarship and the decision of the committee shall be final.
  • IEHA reserves the right to verify any information on the application.
  • Scholarship recipients will be notified in March 2022 and will be recognized at the IEHA business meeting during the 2022 Public Health Conference of Iowa on May 4, 2022.

To be eligible for this scholarship, recipients must be:

  • A resident of Iowa.
  • A high school senior OR a non-traditional student returning to college in Iowa.
  • Currently a full-time student at any college, university, or community college in Iowa.
  • Recipients must be majoring in Environmental Health or a related field.

To apply for the scholarship, please follow this application process:

  • Download the scholarship application. Complete the application and submit it with all required documents to the address on the bottom of the application. This application cannot be submitted online at this time.
  • Include three (3) letters of recommendation from three (3) individuals that are not family members (i.e. teachers, high school guidance counselors, employers, religious leaders, family friends, etc.)
  • Enclose an official high school transcript.
  • Enclose an essay – approximately 250 words (one typed page, font size 11 or 12) explaining career plans and goals.
  • Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2022.

Inclusive Classroom Conference

Great Prairie AEA, Green Hills AEA, Mississippi Bend AEA, and Prairie Lakes AEA would like to invite you to present at our first-ever collaborative virtual Inclusive Classroom Conference. The Inclusive Classroom Conference will be held virtually on Feb. 9th from 8-4 CST. The virtual sessions will be recorded for participants to watch later if they are unable to during the session time. The deadline to apply to be a speaker at the conference is November 8, 2021, at 4 pm (CST). Our keynotes will be Mike Marotta, Karen Janowski, Chris Bugaj, and Beth Poss the authors of Inclusive Learning 365. We would love to have you present for us with a focus on inclusive classroom strategies for all learners.

Neurodiversity News: Tips for the Upcoming Holiday Season At Home & At School

The Autism Society offers some wonderful tips to help your autistic child cope with all the excitement of the holidays.

  1. Preparation is key. Different children need different amounts of preparation. The use of a calendar and social stories telling what will happen at certain events are excellent tools. Easterseals adds: a visual schedule of what is happening each day is helpful.
  2. Decorations in the home may create anxiety at home. If possible, show pictures from last year’s holidays. Have your child help you buy decorations and help decorate. Establish rules for touching the decorations. adds that heavily scented candles and blinking lights may cause anxiety. WebMD suggests decorating in stages; put up the tree one day and decorate it the next.
  3. If your child begins to obsess over a particular gift, limit the amount of time he/she may discuss it. For example, give the child 5 chips and take a chip away when each discussion occurs. When the chips are gone, the topic is off-limits. If you have no intention of getting that particular gift for your child, be honest and upfront that they will not receive it.
  4. Teach your child what to do if an event is too overwhelming. For example, make a calming space in your home and practice going there when your child is not anxious.
  5. If you are traveling, have their favorite foods and toys available. Social stories are helpful to prepare children for plane flights and plane delays. You can find examples of social stories at Carol Gray Social Stories and at Fusion Autism: 5 Social Stories for the Holidays.
  6. Prepare a photo album of people you will visit during the holidays.
  7. Practice giving and opening gifts (turn-taking). Practice what to do if the child receives a gift they do not like/want.
  8. Prepare family members about your child - does your child like to be hugged or need a bigger space bubble? Help them understand to remain calm and neutral if a behavioral outburst occurs. If well-meaning people offer advice, smile and say, “I’ll think about that.”
  9. Per WebMD, approximately 50% of children with autism wander. Have a multifaceted approach for safety when shopping or at parties. For some children, a tracker may be beneficial.
  10. Set your expectations, stick to them, reward positive behavior, and enjoy this wonderful time of year with your child!
