The CPCSC will also select an “Employee of the Year” recipient for the classified staff.

Social-Emotional News from Mrs. Holok
The death of a pet is a very difficult event for a child. Pets become part of our families. Your child most likely looks to your pet for companionship as well as comfort when upset. It’s impossible to shelter a child from the loss of a pet. But parents can help children cope with the grief they are experiencing. Grieving a pet can help children to cope with other losses throughout life.
Breaking the news to a child is one of the most difficult parts of losing a pet. Try to do so in a place they feel safe and comfortable, one-on-one if possible. Gauge how much detailed information your child needs to hear based on their age and maturity level. If your pet is very old or has been ill for a long time, consider talking to your child before the death happens. If you have to euthanize your pet, explain that:
· the veterinarians have done everything that they can
· your pet will not be able to get better
· this is the kindest way to take the pet's pain away
· the pet will not be hurt in any way and will die peacefully
Be cautious about using the phrase, “got put to sleep”. Young children take things literally and this may scare a child about sleep or surgery and anesthesia. It’s also a good idea to be as honest as possible. Telling a child, the dog “ran away” will not alleviate the sadness of losing the pet. And, if the truth comes out the child may be angry that you lied.
Like anyone dealing with a loss, kids usually feel a variety of emotions besides sadness after the death of a pet. They might also feel loneliness, anger, frustration, or even guilt/regret. Help your child understand that it's normal to feel all of those emotions, that it's OK to not want to talk about them at first, and that you are there when they are ready to talk. Don't feel the need to hide your own sadness. Showing your kids how you feel and talking openly allows them to know it’s OK to feel sad, to talk about their feelings and to cry when they need to. Sharing stories about your own losses as a child can be comforting.
In order to move on and heal, it can be helpful to find special ways to remember a pet. You might hold a ceremony to share memories and fun times with the pet. You can make a memory book with pictures to look at when missing the pet.
Grieving a pet is very much like grieving a person for a child. Make sure to talk about your pet often and in loving ways. Let your child know that the pain will start to go away, and they will always have the happy memories. Consider getting a new pet when the time is right, not as a replacement, but as a way to welcome another pet into your home.

A MESSAGE FROM STUDENT COUNCIL
Dear T-Ball families,
The members of Student Council would like to ask for your support. This month, we are raffling off a humongous Scooby-Doo in order to help local animal shelters. It starts January 21st and ends January 31st. If you would like to support us, please send one of the following items. For every item you bring in your name will be entered in the drawing.
Pillows
Food (cat, dog, etc)
Toys
Blankets
Beds
Pet bathroom supplies
Grooming supplies
Etc.
If you want to help, have your child take the donated item to the lobby and they have a chance to win the Scooby-Doo. Switch it around and be a dog's best friend.
STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOOL STORE
The school store will be open in the cafeteria in the mornings before school on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 until the bell rings. Prices begin at 25 cents. We have pens, pencils, bookmarks, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, etc.
FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Our nurse is in need of boy and girl pants. Mostly sweats and comfy pants to help fit more students. Please put an extra pair of clothes in your child’s backpack/locker. The nurse has clothes but not always every size! Thank you!
Attention: If your child has a Dr. note restricting them from PE they must sit out from recess. They can sit on the bench with a book or game. This is to keep them safe from further injury. If you have any questions please contact our nurse, Mrs. Schurch.
Regarding Taking Medication at School - Remember that ALL medications must be accompanied by doctor & parent notes. Otherwise the medication cannot be given at school. All medication must be in its original container. All prescription medication must have the correct information on the label. Also, no cough drops, or essential oils are allowed at school unless accompanied by doctor & parent notes. No child should be bringing medication to school in order to self medicate.
Regarding Illness - Please keep all sick children home if they are running a fever of 100.0 or above, vomiting, or have diarrhea. A child running a fever can return to school once he/she has been fever free for 24 hours.
