Hello Hornung Families,

The Scholastic Book Fair is here! It's LIVE today through November 5th. Please click on the link below to access our virtual Fair. Scroll down to the Virtual Fair image and click on "Shop the Virtual Fair". You will be asked to login or create a free login to order books online, and for Hornung to get credit for your purchases. If you would like to help build your child's classroom library, the Teachers have created Wish Lists. These are located in the Signup Genius link below. As Teachers give Mrs. Richard's their lists, she will continue to update this link. Thank you for supporting your child's love of reading!

Information from Lifetouch regarding picture orders

If you did not have the opportunity to order your student's picture on picture day, you will have another chance. Lifetouch will ship all student pictures to the school, usually in about 3 weeks or so. At that time, if you did not order pictures, your student's picture envelope will have a proof sheet in it with ordering information. Use that information to order your student's picture using the portrait ID/access code. You will be charged shipping and the picture package will ship directly to your home address.

Outdoor gym attire

Weather is getting colder and the grass is wet! Please make sure to pack gloves, a hat, and coat every day so you are prepared for outdoor gym class! Also, rubber soled, water-proof boots you are able to move and run in would be great as well.

Update from the Hornung Library/STEAM Center

Hi Hornung Families! It's Digital Citizenship month, and I am so proud of all of our students for engaging in discussions on how to be safe online. If you would like to continue the discussion at home, please ask them about this. They may ask you if they can play Interland. It's a brilliant online game developed by Google to help teach our students how to be good Digital Citizens. They can access this at home through our Media Center website, under Digital Citizenship. Counselor Corner

Hello from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs McKiddy! I have very much enjoyed our start to a great school year. I spent the month of September visiting classrooms for a social-emotional lesson centered around resiliency and working through challenges. I have also increased visits with individual students needing social-emotional support. I am working hard to add some peer support groups by the end of the month! As the year progresses, I am continuing to connect with classroom teachers for referrals for students who are struggling or may need additional support. If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.

We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! Please feel free to contact your counselor with any questions or concerns that you may have, and Mrs. Fox or Mrs. McKiddy will do their best to support your child.

Student Nutrition Program Brighton Area Schools

Student Nutrition Program Brighton Area Schools to Provide Free Breakfast and Lunch to all Students

Effective immediately, school breakfast and lunch will be available at no charge to all Brighton Area Schools students under a temporary waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). ALL students learning in the classroom, or remotely are eligible for FREE breakfast and lunch through December 31st or until Federal funding runs out.

A credit will be issued back to student lunch accounts for all reduced-price and full-paid meals purchased as of September 14th through today. Students who do not qualify for free meals will lose this benefit when the waiver expires or funding ends.

Furthermore, the USDA waiver provides the flexibility and funding to ensure nutritious meals reach all children 18 years and younger in this fluid and fast-changing time.

Brighton Area Schools will continue to serve breakfast and lunch according to our established back-to-school meal service plan. Remote study students may still pre-order meals for pick up on Wednesdays at any Brighton High School.

Families are still encouraged to apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits by October 15th to avoid any disruption of current meal benefits when this USDA waiver expires. We recommend families apply for school meal benefits online. The online process is quick and easy, and we are able to review your application much faster than the traditional paper method. This service is free and facilitates a socially distanced, contact free application process for our families!
