ALERT! Email Scams
Please be wary of email scams such as the examples below:
o Tutoring Scam - A scammer communicates via text/email with victim to arrange a tutoring appointment. The scammer sends a fake check that the victim deposits. The tutoring session is canceled before the check clears and the scammer asks the victim for reimbursement. Learn more about fake check scams on the FTC’s website.
o Gift Card Scam - A scammer impersonates a person of authority (school principal) via a non-@hcpss.org email account. The scammer asks the victim to buy and send gift cards to the personal email account. Learn more about the gift card scam on the Technology Resources Canvas community.
o Gathering Account Credentials - An attacker sends an urgent email telling the victim they must click a link and login using their HCPSS credentials on a fake website. The credentials are gathered and used to access the victim’s accounts. Learn more about phishing on the Technology Resources Canvas community.
o Malware - An attacker sends an urgent message with an attachment indicating the victim must download the file. Downloading the file allows malware to be installed on the computer. Learn more about malware on the FTC’s website.
o Employees are encouraged to forward any suspected fraudulent emails to abuse@hcpss.org, and then delete the email. If assistance is needed, contact the Technology Support at x7004.
