1A Classroom Update 13
April 28, 2017
Dear 1A Families,
Reading
Our 1A friends are now fairy tale experts! We have been focusing on identifying the central message not only within fairy tales but in other fictional stories as well. A central message is the hidden message or lesson of the story that the author wants us to learn. When reading with your child at home, ask them why they think the author wrote the story and have a discussion about the moral of the stories! After this, we will begin our unit on poetry!
Writing
We have been critics in 1A lately! As a part of our opinion writing unit, our 1A friends have learned how to write reviews of various restaurants, movies, videos, games, etc. To do this, we started with rating each thing with a 5-star rating system. Then we started to actually write reviews on a topic that we feel very strongly about. We learned how to be convincing in our review by making it sound like we are talking to the readers and making comparisons. We ended our reviews by making a catchy conclusion that repeated our opinion.
Math
Our mathematicians are back in action! These past couple of weeks our friends have been exploring coins and their value. Through different activities friends were able identify the attributes within each coin while also using their knowledge of money to shop! One of our shopping stations required our friends to flip over a card that had a special item with a price to pay! Friends had to find different combinations of coins in order to purchase these items. Safe to say our friends spent a lot of money! In the next couple of weeks, our mathematicians will work on Place Value past the number 100!! Thus far, we have been working on identifying tens and ones up to the number 120 and how to write them on a place value chart.
Inquiry
We started our new unit on Celebrations and Traditions by exploring artifacts from various celebrations. We then brainstormed what celebrations or traditions we knew a lot about and what we would like to learn more about. We had some questions about specific celebrations that we are hoping to find out through our explorations in the next few weeks!

Specials Update
P.E UPDATE from Coach M & M
¡Me gusta 1A en la clase de Español!
1A explored sus cinco sentidos (five senses). We used: oído, vista, olfato, gusto y tacto to identify objects in our world. We created a 5 senses “spin the wheel” and used it to play and tell our friends what to do. We are starting the new IB Unit: Celebraciones by learning about food (La comida) in different Spanish speaking countries — mainly in México. 1A students express likes and dislikes using the phrases: Me gusta y no me gusta. ¿Qué te gusta comer? Check out the pictures and, please, continue to practicing our songs and phrases at home.
PS.
Last week First Grade saw Los tres cerditos y la loba feroz/ The 3 Pigettes and the Big Bad Lady Wolf at Teatro Sea. Students voted 5 stars, Best bilingual experience ever!!! Please check out the pictures and play review located on the 10th-floor bulletin board. Big thanks to all the parents/volunteers who joined us on this adventure!
