WDMCS Welcoming Week
Sept. 11-15

Welcome to Welcoming Week!
West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) invites our students, families, and community to observe Welcoming Week with us!
In 2022, WDMCS joined the Welcoming Network and observed Welcoming Week, national initiatives created by the non-profit organization Welcoming America. We became one of thousands of organizations across the country to bring together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.
This Welcoming Week, Sept. 11-15, WDMCS will focus on the theme "Safe Communities." Various events and activities will explore ways we create, support, and elevate belonging in our district.
Welcoming Week Events
Featuring WDMCS Parent Erlin Kakkanad
To kick off Welcoming Week, WDMCS is highlighting two events featuring speaker, author, and WDMCS parent Erlin Kakkanad.
Currently the founder/CEO of Coach for Influence and a director with Principal Financial Group, Erlin has over 15 years of experience leading large scale projects and programs, and started her career in India before traveling to Canada and then the US as an international innovation and process improvement consultant. She is passionate about unlocking human creativity in solution delivery. A certified master facilitator, Erlin has a bachelor's degree in Computer Application, a master's degree in HR and Organization Psychology, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education at Drake University.
Monday: "Happy in Your Skin" Book Talk
The West Des Moines Public Library is hosting a book talk about "Happy in Your Skin: Is Rafa Different?," Erlin's award-winning debut children's book. An Amazon best-seller, this book is based on closing the literature gap and the lack of stories from certain cultural backgrounds. Erlin writes:
"Why is my skin color different? This was the question my preschooler asked me.
While it was a shock and hard to process at the moment for me, I knew I needed to help my child navigate through these feelings and curiosities about his identity.

Monday, Sept. 11

Tuesday: "What We Can Learn from Kids About Race and Inclusion"
Join us in this inspiring talk, "What We Can Learn from Kids about Race and Inclusion: Nurturing Cultural Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Unleashing Children's Creative Genius," as we explore actionable steps to enhance representation, exposure, and cultural understanding among children while addressing equity and bias.
By fostering an environment where children feel proud of their identity, we can empower them to embrace diversity and develop social-emotional intelligence. We will delve into the importance of the learning zone, social-emotional intelligence, and nurturing creative genius. Parents and Educators play a crucial role in this process, both as teachers and as learners at home and in the classroom. By prioritizing social and emotional development alongside traditional academics, we can shape a future where every child thrives in the comfort of their own skin.
