Dear Parents,
Thank you for another great week. This was an exciting week for us. I am pleased to say we inducted our 2015-2016 Student Senators today. I am looking forward to their leadership and the great things they are going to accomplish this year. Please enjoy your weekend and thank you for your commitment to Oak Ridge.

News and Notes
Dress your Children for Winter Weather
Please send your children to school with a warm coat, boots, snowpants, hat, mittens. The children will go out for lunch recess every day unless it is between 15 and 20 degrees factoring in the wind chill. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Parent Series
The Royal Oak PTA Council and Royal Oak Middle School are sponsoring a five part Parent Workshop Series. You are welcome to attend the entire series or simply the sessions that are of interest to you. The workshops are free. The next workshop in the series will be held on November 19, 2015, on the topic “Avoiding Helicopter Parenting (but still be in the airport).” All workshops are at Royal Oak Middle School and begin at 6:00 p.m. For more information, including how to register for the workshops, please click here.
Erin's Law and HAVEN Presentations
You should have received a parent letter home regarding an upcoming presentation by HAVEN. HAVEN is a non-profit organization in Oakland County that specializes in counseling advocacy and education to prevent sexual abuse. HAVEN presented to the Royal Oak School Board about the program that they will be bringing to the schools. To see that presentation please click on the following link:http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/70819213. The presentation begins at the 6:30 mark of the meeting.
The Royal Oak School District choose HAVEN to provide these presentations for us because of their expertise in the field and to satisfy the requirements under ERIN's Law.“Erin’s Law” requires that all public schools in each state implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program which teaches:
- Students in grades preK – 12th grade, age-appropriate techniques to recognize child sexual abuse and tell a trusted adult
- School personnel all about child sexual abuse
- Parents & guardians the warning signs of child sexual abuse, plus needed assistance, referral or resource information to support sexually abused children and their families.
Presentations by HAVEN will take place November 24th, at Oak Ridge. If you would like to review the materials ahead of time, you may receive copies at the Board Office. For additional resources, please look below:
Erin’s Law is named after childhood sexual assault survivor, author, speaker and activist Erin Merryn, who is the founder and President of Erin’s Law. Erin's Law was passed in Michigan in 2013.

HAVEN is Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people each year.
Front Circle Drop Off
Please make sure you pull all the way to the front door when dropping off students in the morning. This will create more room for the cars behind you and alleviate congestion. Thank you.
Dentists R Us will be here Tuesday, November 17th.
If you would like your child to participate in this program, please make sure you send in your form before Tuesday. Dentists R Us provides an oral exam, cleaning, flouride, sealants and necessary x-rays. An oral health report and toothbrush will be provided to each child. This is the third year Dentists R Us have provided services to the students at Oak Ridge. We have been very pleased with them.
FLU VACCINATION PROGRAM- DECEMBER 1ST
The Flu vaccination clinic has been scheduled for DECEMBER 1, 2015. We will keep all of your Patient Consent Forms. If you are not interested in having your child receive the FluMist vaccine here at school please call the school office and we will remove your consent form. The flu is a serious illness. The best way to prevent the flu is through vaccination. Flu season usually peaks in February so December is not too late to be vaccinated.
Thank you for your continued support.

From the desk of the Student Senate
Hello Parents -- Please take note of the Red Wing ticket flyer that came home announcing the Oak Ridge Red Wing game scheduled for December 14th, 2015. Ticket sales/orders are due back by Friday, November 13th.
This event, sponsored by the Detroit Red Wings and the Oak Ridge Student Senate, offers reduced rate tickets for the game and returns a portion of the profit back to our school.
Below you will find examples of how our Student Senate funds have been used to "GIVE BACK" or "PAY FORWARD" to our community and our school:
In our community ...
- Donating to Relay for Life
- Donating Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
- Donating to the Boys and Girls Club of Royal Oak.
In our school... we have purchased math materials for peer tutoring, a buddy bench for our upper and lower elementary playgrounds, and a garden peace pole for the Oak Ridge Garden.
Thank you for participating in this wonderful opportunity to support our Oak Ridge community and to enjoy a Red Wings game with your family and friends.
Sincerely,
Oak Ridge Student Senate
