Letter from Principal Nelson
Cougar Nation-
We trust all in your household are safe and hopefully warm. Dropping 56 degrees in one evening is not only record-breaking but surreal. From the low 80s to a 2-hour delayed start in less than 14 hours is not a common occurrence.
In regards to safety and the delayed start, please keep in mind that AISD does not know your commute or the condition of your car, so if ever you feel it is not safe to drive, don’t. No amount of learning is worth putting yourself and your student in jeopardy. If you prefer to stay off the roads on days such as Thursday, we are completely fine with it. We simply ask that you call our attendance clerk and have your student check in with their teachers. Trust me, whatever is missed is not worth placing your family or vehicle in danger.
New Green Tech and Dual Language students: We all know we have it good, better than good in fact, and now 125 new Cougars are beginning to see how good it is as well. Last Wednesday night our little slice of heaven indoctrinated next year’s (transfer) 6th-grade class into the fold via zoom and shared with them some of the secrets of Smallville. Kids and family were beyond excited to learn about choice sheets, tips and tricks for survival, and important dates for all newbies. We cannot wait to see these kids on campus next year and know that our current 6th and 7th grade students will not only welcome them with open arms but also serve as mentors and guides for them throughout their middle school career. Kudos to Campus Manager Jennifer Newell, our counseling team, our Fine Arts teachers, and our Dual Language teachers for spending their Wednesday evening sharing with others what makes Small so special.

Classified Employee of the Year 2021-2022: We have over 30 adults here on campus who are not teachers but impact our students each and every day. These employees work in our classrooms, our office, our cafeteria, and keep our school clean and organized. They are as important to the success of students in Smallville as you and I, and there are very few words or accolades we can bestow upon them that show them how much they mean to all of us.
That being said, when the staff was polled and asked to select one name of the many as this year’s Classified Employee of the Year, the honor belonged to Heather Poehl. Mrs. Poehl works with our SCS Team and is not only the calmest person kids see throughout the day but also one of the friendliest. She makes sure all students she works with feel valued, have voice, and have somebody in their corner. She never judges nor condemns and sees every part of a student’s school day as a learning opportunity. We are all amazed at her dedication to her craft, the care she gives all in her charge, and her insatiable desire to help those around her. We are most fortunate our students have her as a guide through the tumultuous waters of middle school and that we have her here on our team encouraging us to be more like her through her actions; kind, patient, and virtuous.
Enjoy your weekend with your fam and stay warm!

New Attendance Clerk and Procedures
Hi everyone, I am Amanda Elliott the new attendance specialist at Small. I am excited to be working with everyone and look forward to getting to know you. We have updated the Small Website Attendance page and can submit notes online. This will allow for less paper and will help make Small a Greener Campus. On the Attendance Page you can now enter an absence and request an early pickup. Remember when picking up students early to give us at least an hour notice. This will ensure you are not waiting for your student for up to 15 minutes to arrive when you get here. It helps saves you time as well and will make sure you get to where you need to go as well. You can still handwrite an excuse note as well if needed. Don't forget that school starts right at 8:20. If you arrive after that your student will be marked Tardy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions by email at amanda.elliott@austinisd.org or directly at 512-841-6702. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
