Rowayton Rocks Wellness!
We are hosting a Wellness Week January 23 - 27. Each day will have a theme with activities related to the focus of that day.
Please stop by the sign display on the front lawn on Monday and Tuesday to show us how you rock wellness! Pictures can be shared with CummingsC@NorwalkPS.org to be displayed on our Wellness Bulletin Board in school.
Wellness Week 2023
Mindfulness Monday: yoga and breathing, mindful activities with school counselor Mrs. Bria
Talk About it Tuesday: school assembly with Connecticut State K9 teams
Work Out Wednesday: extra opportunities for physical activity, fitness with Mr. Lerchen
Thankful Thursday: recognizing our farmers, orange food tasting during lunch
Fuel Friday: school assembly to learn what foods and aerobic movements fuel our bodies
Please note that the assembly on Tuesday, January 24 will have live K9s. Students will only observe the animals in order to expand their learning. Students will not directly interact with or touch the animals. The K9s will be supervised by trained officers. We will review with students the proper protocol for observing the animal visitors in order to maintain a calm and stress free environment. Exposure to live animals for the purpose of learning is a wonderful experience, but we understand that some of our students may have allergies or may not want to participate in this experience. If your child does not want to observe this assembly, please let your classroom teacher know and we will provide an alternate activity.
Orange Food Tasting at Lunch on Thursday
On Thursday, January 26th the featured school lunch is a hot turkey and cheese sandwich on a whole grain bagel featuring ORANGE sides! Sweet potato fries, carrots, and cantaloupe – just what the optometrist ordered! There is also a Strawberry Parfait with Granola as a cold lunch alternate for the week. Not only is yogurt a great source of calcium and vitamin D which is essential for healthy bones, but it also contains live and active cultures which are fantastic for supporting a healthy digestive system.
Chartwells is supporting our wellness initiative and serving healthy orange foods at lunch. They are also looking for feedback from families on our school lunches. Please use the link below to share your ideas.

Wellness Focus for the New Year
The Color of the Month for January is Orange! Orange represents optimism, energy, and confidence. Natural orange foods are good for your eyes, immune system, and heart.
Parents are invited to donate healthy snacks or games related to the Color of the Month for classrooms. Ideas for this month could be clementines or carrots for snacks, and a basketball for recess.
The color for February will be red. Red represents love, passion, and joy! The Wellness Committees are already planning to celebrate Heart Health Month, Black History Month, and Valentine's Day by incorporating these themes into body, heart, and mind activities. We ask families to join us by considering activities, crafts, or healthy snacks that can be used to promote wellness as we celebrate February!
Rowayton Library Goes Orange!
Check out the "orange-ment" in Rowayton Library ...
To support our Wellness Colors of the Month initiative, our neighbor the Rowayton Library has featured a number of books related to "orange." Pop in and check out their selection of books on bravery, confidence, energy, and, yes, oranges! And, remember, any student of Norwalk school can obtain their Rowayton Library card.
Health Updates from the Nurse
To aid in minimizing the spread of illness in school, the following are helpful guidelines to follow when your child is sick and not well enough to participate in school. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, prevention and mitigation strategies recommended by the State of Connecticut, Local and State Departments of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be maintained in the Norwalk Public Schools.
Please refer to the Norwalk Public Schools webpage at www.norwalkps.org for COVID-19 resources and information. COVID-19 Guidelines
● If your child or anyone in your household is diagnosed with COVID-19, please notify the School Nurse.
● Any student assessed by the School Nurse and identified with signs and symptoms of COVID-19 will be separated in a monitored area, in or near the health office, and excluded from school. It will be recommended that they see their healthcare provider. A healthcare provider’s note or documentation of a negative COVID-19 test will be required to return to school.
● In the event of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, the student may return to school after the guidelines for ending isolation have been met. In addition to COVID-19, your child must stay home for:
● A temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher until he/she is fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Fever is a symptom indicating the presence of an illness.
● For the Flu – may return to school when fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, and also symptom-free
● Runny nose/sniffles – may return to school with proof of a negative COVID-19 test (including home test kits), will be asked to wear a mask
● An undiagnosed rash – note from medical provider required for return to school
● Vomiting in the last 24 hours; day 0 is the day of the last vomiting episode and day 1 is the following day student should stay home. Student may return on day 2.
● Diarrhea in the last 24 hours; day 0 is the day of the last diarrhea episode and day 1 is the following day student should stay home. Student may return on day 2.
● A severe cough, and/or chest congestion, a thick or constant nasal discharge, and/or sneezing
● Chills or general body discomfort that will interfere with your child’s ability to participate in his/her school day
● A severe sore throat, and for 24 hours after the start of antibiotics if diagnosed with strep throat;
● A severe earache with or without fever
● Pink eye with discharge until 24 hours after the start of antibiotic eye drops;
● Impetigo: Blister-like lesions that develop into crusted sores, generally located around the mouth and nose. Your child must remain home until receiving antibiotics for 24 hours and the sores are no longer draining.
● Ringworm: A fungal infection that causes a flat, red ring-shaped rash which may itch or burn. Your child should remain home until receiving 24 hours of anti-fungal treatment. Lesions are to remain covered in school.
● Chicken Pox: Even if your child has received the chicken pox vaccine, there is still a slight chance he/she may get a mild case. Your child must remain at home until all blisters have scabbed over, generally 5 to 7 days.
A child's ability to learn and perform in school can depend on how they feel physically. Keeping your child home when he/she is ill not only prevents the spread of illness in the school community, but allows your child an opportunity to rest and recover. Please be sure that the school has current phone contact information for you and your emergency contacts. If your child becomes sick at school, please have arrangements for your child to be picked up within 30 minutes. Sick children will not be permitted to ride the bus home. Please contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. These guidelines are subject to change based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the local and state departments of public health.
