News From the Board
Hi everyone! I hope you had a lovely holiday.
The Board met last week and had another productive meeting. Board minutes are available on request through the school office or Board Secretary, Carol.
We started with an update of where we are at in relation to review of our school’s Strategic Goals 1 and 2 - both of which focus on maximising student achievement. It is great to see the Board and our teachers are tracking well in terms of the actions outlined in our Annual Plan. This is available on the school website.
We had a quick look at the Literacy Hub, a new tool currently being rolled out across the school to help our children with knowing where they are going in their writing and reading; another step towards developing more independent learners or ‘learner agency’.
Don’t forget to check in with the Principal’s Blog which will give you an insight into what happens at school ‘behind the scenes’. https://ngaereschoolprincipal.blogspot.com
We currently have a healthy roll of 153. Some interesting points about our school community’s makeup includes: 111 out of our current 153 children have been at Ngaere School since Year 1; only 33 out of our 96 current families classify themselves as farmers; we have more families who reside out of zone than in zone; and most of our new entrants for this year are siblings of current students.
The Board took some time to talk through the implications of the upcoming primary school teachers strike on the 15 August. After much consideration, we have made the decision to close the school for the duration of the strike. It has now been confirmed that the strike will take place for the full day, from the hours of 7am to 7pm. We appreciate it's a tricky time of year to have kids at home, but it’s important we support our teachers.
Finally, you may have noticed some improvements around the school, such as the new fence by the pool car park and the curbing on the car park. Thank you very much to all involved.
That's all until next month,
Board Chair, Karen
(On behalf of the Board)
Congratulations!
A special thank you to our coaches - Kelly Larsen, Bernadette Joubert, Anita Haami & Tarsh Hey.

Enviro Group Update
Work is underway with the 'Outdoor Classroom' area. We have sought guidance from the Regional Council and NP Permaculturalist, Dee Turner so now have a comprehensive list of possible plantings, primarily for stage 1, native tree shelter. We have some fruit trees ready to be planted (thank you to the Gribble's for their donation of an apple tree) and the rocks (thanks Alister) are ready to be placed. Shane Jordan has donated some macrocarpa slabs which be made into seating by caretaker Bill and helpers. Once our plants arrive we will be calling for volunteers to help children plant!
We are after any donations to help us move forward: old carpet (to serve as weed mat), bamboo / wooden stakes for tree support, any unused garden tools (wheel barrow, trowels, spades), a garden shed (doesn't need to be big), native trees or shrubs, fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, potting mix or compost to start our own seeds, mulch... anything!
Wanted - bottle tops from milk, soft drink bottles. To Whio Room (Rm 5) please.
