SJS Newsletter Term 1 Week 8
Newsletter 23 March 2022
Our Vision: To grow Catholic, Christian young people,
who are confident, connected lifelong learners, inspired by the teachings of Jesus,
and who make a positive difference in their community.
Tēnā tātou
Today we had a visit from Father Jo who is the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit parish priest. We are grateful to Father Jo for his support. He has offered us help from the parish if teachers need help delivering learning to families who are isolating.
Today, LS6, were priviledged to be at the church for the Liturgy to welcome the Te Ara a Maria to our Diocese. This art work was commissioned by our Bishops to be a depiction of Mary that connects her to Aotearoa.
This Friday 25 March we have School Photos. Learners are to come to school in full school uniform (not their PE Uniform) on this day, they are to wear or have their jersey/cardigan and school shoes/sandals.
Once again we very grateful to be in such healthy environment at the moment. Thank you for supporting us with all our Covid protocols.
Blessings on your week

Catholic Special Character - Holy Week
What is Holy Week?
Holy Week is an important time for Christians throughout the world.
Holy Week, the final week of Lent, begins on Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. Holy Week is a time when Catholics gather to remember and participate in the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Passion was the final period of Christ’s life in Jerusalem. It spans from when He arrived in Jerusalem to when He was crucified.
Palm Sunday
Holy Week begins with the sixth Sunday in Lent, called Palm Sunday.
This Sunday observes the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem for Passover, where we join in with waving Palm branches and proclaiming him as the king.
This Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday to commemorate the beginning of Holy Week and Jesus’ final journey to the cross on Good Friday.
We will celebrate Palm Sunday at school together with a Palm Sunday Liturgy at Gathering time, 12:00pm, on Monday 11th April.
Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus consecrated bread and wine, and talked to His friends about service and what He wanted them to do in His name once He was gone, illustrating this when He washed their feet.
We will celebrate Holy Thursday, the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet with a Liturgy at school at 12:00pm, on Thursday 14th April.
Good Friday
Good Friday is the day when we remember Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion, death and burial.
These events are commemorated in the Stations of the Cross, a 14 step devotion, traditionally prayed during Lent, and especially on Good Friday.
Good Friday is a day of fasting within the Church.
Traditionally, there is no Mass and no celebration of the Eucharist. Instead there is a gathering where we, as a community, hear about Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion, death and burial.
We will commemorate Good Friday at school with the praying of Living Stations of the Cross on Tuesday 5th of April and Wednesday 6th of April.
Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday remembers the day which Jesus spent in the grave resting.
An Easter Vigil is often held in churches in the evening/night of Holy Saturday because the new liturgical day begins at sunset. The vigil often begins outside the Church, where an Easter fire is kindled and the Paschal candle is blessed and then lit.
The Paschal candle will be used throughout the season of Easter, remaining in the sanctuary of the church, and throughout the coming year at baptisms and funerals, reminding all that Christ is our life and light.
After the conclusion of the Liturgy of the Word, the water of the baptismal font is solemnly blessed and any catechumens and candidates are initiated into the church.
Easter Sunday
Easter is the celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead.
It is celebrated on Sunday, and marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, the last day of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday), and is the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year.
As we know from the Gospels, Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion, which would be Sunday. His resurrection marks the triumph of good over evil, sin and death. It is the singular event which proves that those who trust in God and accept Christ will be raised from the dead.
Since Easter represents the fulfillment of God's promises to mankind, it is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar.
Caritas Challenge 2022
Last Friday learners came to school in red and white non-uniform, the colours on the Tongan flag. We raised $230.10.

Getting Involved
Find out more about Triple P and register for programmes. There are three free Triple P online programmes available to help positively support children to reduce anxiety, build emotional resilience and life skills and cope with challenges:
Fear-Less Triple P Online – for parents and caregivers of children and teenagers (aged six to 14 years) who have significant anxiety
Triple P Online – for parents with toddlers to 12-year-olds
Teen Triple P Online – for parents with ‘tweens’ or teenagers aged 10 to 16 years.
These programmes will also provide whānau a toolkit to help them to guide behaviour positively and encourage children’s learning.
One small way we can make life easier for others which costs us nothing, is to collect stamps, can tabs, and wine bottle tops!
You will find collection boxes for these in the School Office foyer. If, as a family you don't already set these items aside for Kidney Kids at Starship and the Missions, you may like to start, as a very visible witness to demonstrating Jesus' example of LOVE. Encourage neighbours and family to do the same. There is no deadline.
