A Note from the Principal
Dear Woodland Families,
I cannot believe that this is our last Woodland Watch of the year! Boy, has the year flown by! I have enjoyed getting to know all the Woodland students and their families. I am so proud of the hard work students have put in this year. I’ve loved watching the students learn and grow academically, emotionally and socially.
Today we enjoyed Field Day with all of our students. Our students demonstrated so many of our Positivity Project strengths- teamwork, perseverance, bravery, zest, self-control, and fairness. They were also extremely flexible since we had to make last minute adjustments due to our field conditions. A special thank you to Mr. Daniels for setting everything up and to ALL of our wonderful volunteers who made the day so much fun!
Please join us next Friday at 11: 35am as we Clap Out our 5th graders & celebrate their last dismissal as Wildcats! This is a fun tradition that we do each year! Everyone is welcome to line the halls with us and clap them out. We will start to assemble at 11:25am. Parking may be at a premium. You may want to park across the street and walk over.
I want to give a special shout out to our students in the GATE program. I am so glad that we got to be a part of the development of the program to meet the needs of so many students. This is not good-bye, it's until we see you again! Enjoy your new home!
Woodland is a very special place. Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives. Enjoy the summer with your families and we look forward to seeing you on August 27th for Popsicles with the Principal!
Have a fabulous weekend and summer!

How to Avoid the Summer Reading Slide Presentation
Thank you to our reading support staff who presented on Thursday evening to parents! Mrs. Alonso, Mr. Sal, Mrs. Bladecki, and Mrs. Rosinski have worked hard this year working with students to improve their reading skills. They hosted an information night for the families that worked with them sharing the 3rd grade Reading Law and providing additional ideas and activities to further develop their child's literacy skills over the summer. Below you will find a link to the presentation if you were unable to attend.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jill.alonso@avondale.k12.mi.us.
Please watch for another program in the fall!
Bee-A-Reader Summer Meet Up & Read Events
We are so excited to once again be hosting our Bee-a-Reader program at Woodland! See the Flyer section of this newsletter to view download the summer fun reading calendars. We know that engaging in reading activities over the summer helps to prevent a "summer slide." Once or twice a month, we will host a book give-away and opportunity to check out new, fun books to read while at the same time being able to meet up with some friends. This year we will meet up at Dairy Treat, Firefighters Park, and on the Woodland playground.
Tuesday, June 25th 11:00am-12:30pm @ Dairy Treat
Wednesday, July 10th 11:00am-12:30pm @ Firefighters Park in Troy
Tuesday, July 23rd 11:00am-12:30pm @ Woodland’s Playground
Wednesday, August 7th 11:00am-12:30pm @ Dairy Treat
Marker Recycling
As we are approaching our final days, the EcoRangers thought of a very ecofriendly idea! Crayola has a program called Crayola ColorCycle that helps recycle old markers into energy! Did you know recycled markers can be turned into clean fuel? Neither did we! We have placed a box in each pod with a Crayola ColorCycle sign attached to it.
Please, as the year is ending, we are asking families and teachers put all old/dry markers in these boxes for our EcoRangers to collect. Markers include, ANY BRAND markers, highlighters and dry erase markers! We have also put fliers to send home to students this week to help inform parents about turning in old markers from home too.

Thank you for helping the EcoRangers and for helping the Earth!

New Parent Notification System
As of July 1, 2019, we are switching our parent and staff notification system from Blackboard to School Messenger. This change will impact the communications of emergency notifications and messages (both email and phone) that go out from the superintendent, principals and secretaries.
This change is a cost savings to the district and provides additional tools for communications that we will share with you as we bring them online. Most parents’ and guardians’ information will be migrated from MiStar to Student Messenger. We will communicate with you regarding action steps that you need to take (i.e. you are able to assign settings, opt-out of features, etc.) and we will provide instructions to assist you as we move forward.
2018-2019 Oakland County School Culture & Climate Survey - Your Input Is Needed!
Our school and district want to know more about the culture and climate of our school. The results of this survey will be used to improve the programs and services that support teachers and student learning. To this end, we are asking students, staff, and parents/guardians to complete a survey about their experiences in school.
This is an anonymous survey, which means it does not ask for your name or any information that would identify you personally. You are not required to answer any questions that make you feel uncomfortable. Please take this survey seriously as it is an opportunity for you to let us know about what the school and district does well and how they can improve.
The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. The deadline for submission of all surveys is Friday, June 14th (last day of school). Thank you for your time and honest feedback!
