Benfield Family Newsletter

November 4, 2022

Greetings Benfield Families!

With the end of the first marking period, we have much to celebrate! Our children are doing a wonderful job and their excitement for learning is visible throughout the building.

Report cards for grades 1-5 will be available to the parents on November 17th through the portal. Special education progress reports and intervention progress reports will be emailed or sent home with students on that day as well. This year, we will be holding parent teacher conferences on November 21st and 22nd. Teachers will be meeting with all parents during this time. We are looking forward to having this time to meet with our Benfield families!

Harvest for the Hungry

Benfield Elementary was very successful in collecting food for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. We collected over 2,400 pounds of food and our amazing facilities chief, Ms. Bernard boxed all the food for us. Thank you to everyone who participated ! Your generosity will make the difference for those in our county who are in need of support.

Young Author's Contest

Does your child love to write? If so, please take a look at the Young Author's Contest. Please note that all entries must include a Young Author's Contest Cover Sheet.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to be creative and share their love of writing. The school-based winners will advance to the Anne Arundel County Literacy Chapter to complete with other entries from across the county.

Please note that all entries, along with a cover sheet, must be emailed to smoskios@aacps.org no later than Friday, December 2nd.

We hope to have many entries from Benfield students!

Background Checks and Fingerprinting - Updates

What is a parent's expectation of safety for their child while in school or participating in a school event?

Helpful Tips to Remember

  • Any adult (18 or over) with access to students in a school-related event must have a background check.
  • If they have any one-on-one, unsupervised access to students, they must have a fingerprint-supported background check.
  • Large spaces, such as the Media Center, gym, or cafeteria, are considered too large for supervised access. If you have parent volunteers who are sitting one-on-one with a student and the staff member is in the large room with them, it is considered unsupervised and requires the fingerprint-supported background check. One example of this situation is the Chessie Club, run in many Media Centers.
  • All clubs and after-school activities require a staff member as a sponsor, but that staff member does not need to be in the room with them. In that case, the leader of the club needs to have the fingerprint-supported background check and all other volunteers must have the commercial background check (including drama club, band, and athletic volunteers). If the staff member is present, a commercial background check for all volunteers is sufficient.

Please see more examples and information in the chart, Volunteer Background Checks - Who needs them and which kind?. It is also available in our Brightspace PLC for Volunteer Staff Liaisons.

Federal Impact Survey - Don't Forget!

FEDERAL IMPACT PROGRAM SURVEY

Parents who are active military or who live or work on Federal Property in Maryland should complete the Federal Impact Aid Parent-Student Survey.

You will be asked to verify your home address and identify if it is located on federal property. You will also complete sections identifying if a family member is in the military or works on federally owned property in Maryland. The survey should only take a couple of minutes to complete and, be assured, all data collected is kept completely confidential.

Why Complete This Survey?

Anne Arundel County Public Schools, like many local school districts across the United States, include within our boundaries parcels of land that are owned by the Federal Government or that have been removed from the local tax rolls by the Federal Government. Federal property is exempt from local property taxes. By submitting an application to the Department of Education each January, AACPS receives approximately $2 million to assist in educating our students.
