Squalicum High School

Weekly Storm Forecast for October 9-16, 2020

Last Tuesday, we hosted our first virtual STORM FAMILY NIGHT. If you were unable to attend, we have attached a link to the recording for your convenience. Squalicum Family Night

B-day Classes

We just finished the first 22-day cycle of classes on Friday the 9th.

Monday, October 12th, is the first day of classes for periods 5-8. All students have the same Storm class at 8:30, then will start "day one" with periods 5-8. All class links can be found in students' Outlook calendar.

Daily student Attendance

We are tracking student attendance in every class, every day. For most days, this is not a problem since students are present in their morning classes with their teacher. But on Wednesdays, it's a little more complicated.

Please remind your child that they have tasks to complete every Wednesday for every class. Once those tasks are complete, then the teacher is able to mark the student as present.

Update from the Dude, Be Nice! committee

The Storm Leadership class has several committees. One of those is the Dude, Be Nice! team. These students have come up with a creative way to continue to support each other and our staff.

A “Lightning Love” is a note with a heart and a lightning bolt that you can fill in and send to someone you know at SqHS! Lightning Loves are a great way to spread Storm Love throughout the school. Especially with a worldwide pandemic going on, it’s important that we recognize people that mean something to us. Whether it’s a staff member or a fellow classmate, we all need to support each other through these challenging times.

Hello 9th grade parents! We know this is not the year you planned for your 9th graders, but we are going to make it the best possible!! We have lots of supports in place to help your student be successful! In addition to our amazing freshmen teachers we have:

9th grade counselor Debra Smith-Hicks (360) 746-5103 )

I work with all 9th grade students and parents around personal/emotional supports, academic interventions, high school and beyond planning and scheduling.

Counseling Intern Sierra Truesdale joins the team to support students!

Over the next 5 weeks we will have brief individual meetings in the afternoons with all the 9th graders to make a plan for a great year!

Counselors will also teach in 9th grade Storm classes about SQHS supports, credits, grades and gpa, managing stress, and starting their High School and Beyond Plan.

Other supports to help your students have a great freshmen year include

9th grade STORM teachers who will see your student daily in STORM and will check Skyward weekly to monitor your student’s progress. Email if you need your login or password information. Contact teachers with questions or concerns.

Encourage your student to get involved.

Squalicum Clubs will be meeting online! More details to come

Encourage your student to talk to their teachers and use their afternoon time daily to connect with teachers if they need help. If you missed the 9th grade Parent meeting you can see it here!

ASB Cards

At this time ASB cards are not required to participate in activities. We will continue to update you on the status of ASB cards as we get closer to in-building contact and in-person activities.

Attendance reminder

Attendance is taken every day by teachers

We know this is an unprecedented time in remote instruction, and student learning is our primary focus. Being present in class is the first critical piece to the school day.

Be sure to be an ally for your children by encouraging their daily attendance and helping them engage in learning. Helpful parent/guardian tips are found on the Attendance Works website.

Parents - please contact Joanna Cooper by phone or email with any attendance updates.

School staff is also there to help if you need family support around attendance. Reach out to your teachers, principal or counselor with any questions or concerns. Finally, you can review AttendanceWorks.org for helpful action plans and thinking on attendance and the COVID-era attendance tips for parents.
