UAB Clarinet Symposium - Great Opportunity!!
FROM UAB:
The fee for the event is $40 and lunches on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday will be included for participants. Registration link included below.
---------------------------------------
Dear Clarinetists and Educators,
Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited to UAB for the 22nd Annual UABClarinet Symposium, March 2-3, 2024, two days filled with recitals, masterclasses, clarinet choir, and great vendors, including Backun Musical Services and Art's Music Shop.
We have gathered some of the best performers and teachers from around the country; Backun Artist and creator of the highly successful ‘Clarinet Mentors’ online, Michelle Anderson, will be our special guest, along with Buffet Artist, President of the International Clarinet Association and Professor of Clarinet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Diane Barger, Kathleen Costello (Principal Clarinetist of the Alabama Symphony), Brad Whitfield (Associate Principal of the Alabama Symphony), Lori Ardovino, (University of Montevallo), Robert Janssen (Alabama School of Fine Arts), Osiris Molina (University of Alabama), Kip Franklin (University of South Alabama), Brian Viliunas (Samford University), Kelsey Paquin(University of North Alabama), John Warren (Kennesaw State University), the Amicitia Duo, The Terra Winds Clarinet Choir, and many more professional clarinetists from around the region! There will also be sessions available especially for middle school students, including a middle school clarinet choir, and a high school/adult clarinet choir, too and both groups will perform at the end the festival. We will have an exhibit hall so that students can try clarinets and equipment from Backun Musical Services and Art’s Music, and they will also be able to purchase reeds, music, mouthpieces, and a lot of other clarinet-related items. A truly inspirational weekend for all!
Clarinetists can register by going to: https://www.uab.edu/cas/music/ and clicking on the eStore. The fee for the event is $40 and lunches on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday will be included for participants.
If you have any questions, please email Denise Gainey at clarinet@uab.edu or call (205) 975-0558.
Best,

Registration coming soon!
Students will have the opportunity to sign up for band again next year! We are so excited and would love for EVERYONE to sign up again! If you have any questions or concerns, please always feel free to reach out at info@dmsbands.org.
There are many things to look forward to in Concert and Symphonic Band classes! Students in both Concert and Symphonic Band get to perform at the home DMS football games. All students that are in these classes are eligible to register for the annual spring trip to Orlando as well! There are more performances and all of the same fun from beginner band as well. It's a great thing for your student to be part of!
Students will choose a solo for our solo & ensemble project in the next 2 weeks!
Students who are scheduled to attend space camp will miss the process of music listening and choosing a solo, so please keep an eye on our newsletter and schoology pages for these resources!
To receive the grade in class, students will choose one of three solos provided in class.
Students also have the opportunity to prepare their solo, or other duets and trios, for the Solo and Ensemble Festival, held at LMS on April 6th!! Students can earn a medal at this festival if they receive a superior rating for their performance! It's a lot of fun and a great opportunity for small ensemble playing!
For those registered to audition for All State on Saturday:
Audition Times:
Be sure to bring:
- Your music and instrument and everything you need to play (spare reeds, etc)
- Your OWN copy of the blue Rubank book (or percussion books) that music came from, you must show when you register
Make sure you register for both ALL STATE BAND and DISTRICT HONOR BAND -- this audition counts for both events. Please only select one or the other if you know you'll be out of town or something like that. We want everyone to audition for both if possible and we can drop later if necessary!
All State Band: April 25-27
District Honor Band: February 16-17 (probably also evening of 2/15)

Solo and Ensemble coming up soon!
Students have the opportunity to sign up to perform at the Solo and Ensemble Festival for our district. This year, this event will be at LMS on April 6th!
Students prepare (on their own) a solo, duet or trio! Then, they can perform it for a judge at the festival and earn a medal for a superior rating. Highly recommended! There will be a google form registration in the next few weeks. Solo and Ensemble music/materials will be provided in class for the next few weeks and posted in Schoology for reference.

Have your student be thinking about roommates!
4 to a room
Students' hotel roommates ARE their walk-around groups in the parks! Please take this into consideration. They have an assigned seat on the bus they can sit by another different friend if they want, too. Walk-Around groups can also combine! You just need to make sure your student has a good idea of what to expect.
