The Manning Weekly Newsletter
November 6, 2020
Manning Community,
I wanted to keep everyone updated on the current state of COVID-19:
As we see numbers across the county and state increase, many people are wondering if Jeffco is going to go to a remote learning model for all students. All I can tell you at the moment is that the Board of Education is discussing options. No decision has been made yet about if and when we will go to a fully remote learning model.
As you know, Jefferson County moved to level 3 (orange) in our current safer at home model due to the increase in COVID cases, earlier this week. Jeffco Health Services, in collaboration with JCPH and CDPHE, is looking at all options, but we've been told that schools may remain in-person within the level 3 safer at home framework. The most direct impact on Manning and other schools in the district is that we will be moving back to the original quarantine process. So, if any student or teacher tests positive, the entire cohort (staff and students) will be quarantined. The last month, we've been able to use a more focused contact tracing method to determine which students/staff should be quarantined, but that process will not be used in the current safer at home, level 3 framework.
I will keep you up to date as I know more, but that is the most current information that I have regarding COVID-19 and its impact on our Manning community at the moment.
Two reminders in the upcoming dates section below. Our learning model preference survey will open this Monday, November 9th and will close on Friday, November 20th. You will be getting a separate special messenger Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. with the link to this survey. Also, I will also be hosting a town hall meeting this Tuesday evening, November 10th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. (Zoom link is in the "Upcoming Dates" section below). I hope to see you all there!
Finally, I want to apologize for the confusion I may have caused with the 2nd semester learning schedule survey (not to be confused with the learning model survey that opens Monday) that I included in last week's messenger. The survey was not as clear as it could have been, and because of that, the data was skewed. So, I'm asking that each of you click on the link below and complete this survey again so we can have accurate data on what learning schedule our families prefer.

A note from our School Resource Officer, Deputy Candise Lewis
As the School Resource Officer, it is my sole responsibility to keep your children safe while they are at school. Part of doing so is teaching them about the law. Every year I encounter cases where children have sent and/or received naked photographs, sometimes with people they know and sometimes with strangers. I will be holding small classes where I will explain, in an age appropriate manner, the dangers that comes with sexting. My hope is that there will be zero sexting case from Manning this year as a result of my presentation. I will be meeting with the Hybrid A on 11/16 and Hybrid B on 11/18.
Thank you ,
Deputy Candise Lewis

Mobile Mustang Information Corral
Hello, Mobile Mustang Parents and Guardians!
Thank you to the students that have been fully engaged and present in our classes. With the new quarter, everyone started with A’s and many have worked to keep those grades. Some have allowed their grades to drop to a C or lower due to missing assignments or not learning the first time.
Please know that all of us want kids to have an A or B at all times, but we know that sometimes life happens and kids make mistakes. We all offer opportunities to turn in late assignments for a reduced grade. We all are offering multiple opportunities to make up or redo assignments or get help on assignments, including Gmail and Google Chat through the day. However, we do not have an infinite amount of time to allow for improving grades. Please see each teacher’s syllabus for their end of improvement due dates.
Also, please look at Infinite Campus and if your child has anything less than a B, please encourage them to seek help or do assignments that are less than grade level. You can receive notifications from Campus using the app or their website. We can help your child, but we can’t make them get help. Thank you for being a partner in helping your child succeed if they need it.
Crazy as it sounds, 2nd quarter midterm is only 2 weeks away, then there are only 3.5 weeks after that to do as much learning and have as much success as we can. Please reach out to any teacher you might have questions for or would like to schedule a conference.
Thank you for your continued support of your child and the Manning Mobile Mustangs!

A Message from the PTA
As part of the PTA's 20/21 efforts to provide useful programming and a sense of community to our parents, we are offering a number of presentations and trainings. Our next event is on the very important topic of suicide prevention on Thursday, November 12 from 6:30-8:30 pm. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Colorado for youth ages 10-24 and Colorado is unfortunately #1 in the nation for youth suicide. We would like to offer this training in an effort to change this trend. Led by Shawna Fritzler - a Manning alumna parent, Jeffco PTA president and QPR certified trainer - we will learn how to identify warning signs and how to effectively support someone considering suicide.
The PTA will be providing the training free to our members. Non-members are absolutely welcome and encouraged to attend, but are asked to consider joining the PTA or to provide a small donation to cover the cost of materials (via the donate button found at manningpta.org). Please note that this event is capped at 35 participants and is meant for adults 18 and up. There is still space available. If you would like to attend this training on Thursday, November 12 from 6:30-8:30 pm please follow this link to register:
Save the Date! Our next PTA fundraiser will be on Tuesday, November 17 at Noodles (Applewood) from 4-8. See you there!

What is the role of music in your life? How have you used music to set the tone or mood? What about to change your mood? Music is a wonderful tool to help us connect, focus, and let off some steam. Consider taking turns choosing music at dinner or other shared family time- you’ll get to know each other more and differently and give each of your family members a voice in a new way. Social networking isn’t just for social media and job prospects. As a research assistant in grad school, I had the opportunity to create the skeleton data for a social network to facilitate suicide prevention or gatekeeper training. At Drake I brought this experience to look at how our students are connected to each other and our staff, then applied this data to create further connections. I am asking to do the same here at Manning. This data will only be used to create connections, learn more about our community, and be intentional in learning about our gaps. To participate in this data collection please share this google form with your Manning student(s).Want to learn more about social networking data? Click here for one example.

How sick is too sick to stay home from school?
At Jeffco Public Schools, we follow the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when is too sick actually too sick to go to school, work, or child care.
During Colorado's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, children and staff who have been exposed to a positive case or who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 listed below, must follow the Guidance for Cases and Outbreaks in Child Care and Schools.
MAJOR SYMPTOMS of COVID-19
- Feeling feverish, having chills or temperature of 100.4° F or greater
- Loss of taste or smell
- New or unexplained persistent cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
MINOR SYMPTOMS of COVID-19
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Nausea, vomiting
- Diarrhea
There are five main reasons to keep sick children and adults at home:
1. Someone who the child lives with or the staff lives with (or has had close contact with) has been diagnosed with COVID-19, or has symptoms of COVID-19.
2. The child or staff member does not feel well enough to take part in usual activities. For example, a child is overly tired, fussy or will not stop crying.
3. A child needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.
4. The symptom or illness is on this list, and staying home is required.
5. Someone who the child lives with or the staff lives with is being tested for COVID-19.
Remember, the best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.

Quarantine Process Updates: (direct from the district)
In collaboration with Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) and observing Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) updated guidelines, we are revising our quarantine process effective immediately. This will continue to ensure a comprehensive health and safety process while also potentially reducing the number of quarantined students and staff. The revisions modify the identification process for middle and high school students and staff enabling a more precise targeted identification process.
Updates include:
- Elementary schools will have minimal changes.
- Middle and High Schools will use Targeted Contact Identification which can be used in classrooms under the following conditions:
- when there is a documented seating chart,
- documented identified small group participants every day,
- desks separated and at least 6 feet apart,
- desks facing the same direction,
- and students are seated long enough to make seating charts applicable.
Schools will be implementing classroom modifications to ensure targeted contact identification.
