What is communication?

Essentially communication is the process of creating and exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction. Communication is broken down into two categories Verbal Communication and Nonverbal Communication.

Verbal Communication

Verbal communication is communication in the form of spoken or written words such as talking on the phone or sending a text message.

Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal Communication is communication in the form of gestures, eye contact, or tone of voice. Nonverbal communication is basically what you pick up on through body language without the other person saying anything.

Symbolic Communication

Symbolic communication can be broken down into 5 different categories symbols, cave drawings, petroglyphs, pictograms, and ideograms. All these forms of symbolic communication came about through the imperfection of speech which resulted in all these new forms of communication making it easier to communicate among one another.


Symbols are something that represents or stands for something else such as the zodiac signs which indicate when you were born.
