UCONN WATERBURY AND NVCC FIELDTRIP
On Wednesday, November 14th, the School Counseling Department hosted a field trip to UConn Waterbury and Naugatuck Valley Community College. There were 30 students in attendance on the trip. At UConn Waterbury, students were given a campus tour and an informational session from the director of admissions. Students were also able to view the new on-campus housing, better known as the Brown Building. At Naugatuck Valley, students were given a campus tour and heard from a student panel of current NVCC students. Students had lunch at NVCC, providing them exposure to on-campus dining.
In the past, we have hosted field trips to visit 4-year universities. This field trip provided an opportunity for students who are thinking of obtaining an associate’s degree or certificate to view a post-secondary option.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT CAREER PRESENTATION
On Friday, November 9th, Nancy Sheehan’s Child Development class presented to their peers on a career of interest. Each student selected a career they wish to pursue, and researched what the job entails, how they go about getting into the field, salary, location, and other important information. Students also shared important courses to take or clubs to get involved with in order to better prepare them for their career interest. Some careers that students shared included: Police Officer, Child Care Worker, Audiologist, Lawyer, Tour Guide, Endocrinologist, APRN, Veterinarian, and Actress. It was exciting to hear students talk so passionately about their futures! This lesson relates nicely to various lessons taught by the School Counseling department. Both ninth and tenth graders will explore personality types and career interests with their counselor to better prepare for their future. We are excited for this ongoing collaboration to further prepare our students for their post-secondary opportunities.
ALUMNI PANEL
On Wednesday November 21st, eight alumni from the Class of 2018 visited Wolcott High School to speak with our seniors. They shared their experiences of their first semester of college, how the transition has been, and also advice to the senior class about how to make the most of your senior year. The senior class was very attentive and graciously welcomed the alumni back to Wolcott High School. They were excited to hear about life after high school!
NAVIANCE KNOW HOW
All students have a Naviance account https://student.naviance.com/main . Naviance can be used to research careers, search for colleges, and access local scholarship applications. There are also helpful links for students in Naviance (SAT registration, Career sites, FAFSA, etc.).
Naviance is a great resource when looking at colleges with information on areas of study, acceptance rates, student retention, graduation rate, and much more. The Naviance college Compare Me Tool allows students to visually compare their test scores (SAT and ACT) and GPA to other students who have applied and been accepted to the selected college/university. This can help students understand their chances of admission and plan which schools to apply to. Students can compare with other students from Wolcott High School and also compare with all accepted applicants. To find the Compare Me Tool, search a college in your Naviance account and scroll towards the bottom of the screen.
GRADE 9 STUDENTS PERSONALITY PROFILE
The school counseling department conducted a comprehensive counseling lesson with the Grade 9 students. Students completed the Naviance Do What you are personality profile to determine their personality type. Students learned about careers that are matched to their personality, their personal strengths and blindspots, negotiation style, preferred learning style and college satisfiers.
ESPN EMPLOYEE SPEAKS TO WHS STUDENTS
Special thank you goes out to Joe Frady from ESPN for coming in to speak with our seniors in academic support. He told his story of how he was a high school student that needed academic support. He told students that he had to figure out what type of learning style worked for him. He also told them that he had to work harder than others but was able to succeed. Many of the students could relate to him and his message to “believe in yourself and never give up”.
