Kia ora whānau
What an unreal start to 2023. I hope that you are all safe and well and that you have been able to get properties that have been impacted sorted out.
Unfortunately, our site hasn’t escaped without some damage. We have had large leaks in our resource block, my office and the glass toilet block by Space 4. We have also had some minor leaks in some classrooms. I am grateful that the classrooms are largely unaffected, so we can start school as planned on Tuesday 7th of February. We are so very excited to have our learners back to start the school year and to catch up with all of you. A big welcome to new whānau. We look forward to getting to know you as we partner together to Grow Great Learners. If you are unsure of where you are heading to on the first day, please come through the office, and we will take you to the right spaces.
A reminder about where the different hubs are situated this year:
Kākano Team
Hub 1: Rebecca Hedges (Team Leader), Nick Smud & Nicky Davis - Spaces 10 & 11
Pakiaka Team
Hub 1: Natalie Hooker & Sharan Kaur
Hub 2: Ivy Page (Team Leader) & Stephanie de Witte
(hall to start with and then classrooms next to the hall)
Rito Team
Hub 1: Sam Bottcher (Team Leader), Zoe de Wit, Jillian McLean - Spaces 5 & 6
Hub 2: Eden Ward, Lenni Miller & Phoebe Sinclair - Spaces 7, 8 & 9
Māhuri Team
Hub 1: Tracey Notley (Team Leader), Debby Rafter & Helen Lares - Spaces 1 & 2
Hub 2: Sarah Blaney (Team Leader) & Keith Wilson - Spaces 3 & 4
Pakiaka Team temporary classrooms
Learners who are in Pakiaka Team this year, taught by Ivy Page, Natalie Hooker, Stephanie de Witte and Sharan Kaur, will be starting the year off in the hall. This is because Auckland Council cannot sign the temporary classrooms off due to their role in responding to the serious damage across the city. Natalie Hooker will be away for the first week of school, and Jenny Henderson will be teaching alongside Sharan during this time.
Whanaungatanga Day on the 7th of February has been cancelled
Due to the state of the grounds and with Pakiaka learning in the hall, we won’t be able to run Whanaungatanga Day on the 7th of February.
We have, instead, added an evening session on Thursday 16th of February. We also have the evening that was already planned for Wednesday, 15th February open for bookings.
These sessions are a chance for families to pop into the classrooms and meet the teachers, have a look around and a chat together about hopes and aspirations for 2023. Several families can book into each time slot, and the teachers will be moving around touching base with you.
If you had already booked a time for Tuesday 7th, please use the link below to rebook a new session.
Property Update
It’s been all go with the demolition of Block 7, down the back of the school! We now have an even better view (until the new build begins). While the consenting and design process takes place, we will be reclaiming quite a bit of our court space. We are in the process of finalising quotes for our new junior playground, which is very exciting. The cost of this structure has increased, due to the ground works that are required for it’s new position. We are working with the Ministry of Education to negotiate extra funding. In the meantime, we have the bush open for play this term, and we are rostering our teaching teams so that everyone has an opportunity to use the big playground. We will be using the longjump pit as our sandpit and will have lots of gear and equipment for our kids to play with.
