SJI International Elementary School

Week 4 Monday 1st - Friday 5th February

This week...

Wow! What a fantastic end to our half term. The children truly outdid themselves with their baking creations and their packaging. We were very impressed with the standard of work produced and the articulate responses given to their visitors. The children were full of enthusiasm for their learning which was great to see.

Language Arts

This week, amid all the excitement of baking bread, the children have been busy researching, planning and writing their independent explanation piece. It is vital that the children have an opportunity to apply their writing skills across a range of topics. The standard of writing across the grade is continuing to improve.

Our new creative writing club began this week led by Grade 9 High School Students. This is an amazing opportunity for our Grade 5 children. The first session was a big success and everyone came away with a smile on their face!

This week we have introduction of our new unit of volume. We reflected on terms that have been taught before, such as cube and cuboid. We built a few solids with unit cubes and stated if they were a cube or cuboid by solving its volume capacity and noticing significant characteristics. We plotted our understanding on 1 cubic centimeter isometric grids by drawing cuboids and cubes of a variety of volume. In this unit we were introduced the the formula of Length x breath x height to solve problems involving volume.

We used our understanding and excellence to great effect as we have whizzed through this unit. At the start of next half term, we will refocus our undertanding and knowledge to put our skills to the test in our end of unit quiz. Please look out for these and cheer us on as we progress through our tests and quizzes.

The children have had a busy week planning both their packaging and their bread products. They have showed true teamwork, using their cooperation, resilience and communication.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were hectic days and the oven barely had a break, with all classes in the IPC lab making their delicious goodies. The children all showed how much they had learnt over the unit by following their own recipes independently. They are now competent in kneading, timing and dare we say it - tidying up!

The exit point was a great success, and we thank you for taking the time to come and visit. The children were delighted in their finished products and they all enjoyed tasting time!

Next week's Virtue of the Week is Kindness.

Kindness is showing you care, doing some good to make life better for others. It is being thoughtful about people's needs. Kindness is showing love and compassion to someone who is sad or needs your help. Kindness is treating yourself and others gently. It is caring about the earth and all living things.
