NEW "In a Snap" Words
Students received a new 2nd Nine Weeks "In a Snap Word" list
before Winter Break. Please practice these words nightly with your child's Helpful Caboose list. This list can be found inside your child's binder. In a few weeks, we will be sending home the 3rd Nine Weeks list. Thanks!
Reminders
Valentines Boxes
Please share the directions below with your child so he/she can create a Valentine box in which to receive Valentine cards from classmates.
- First, get a box no larger than a cereal box or a shoe box. Plan an opening to make it easy for Valentine’s cards to be delivered. Also be sure there is a way to easily get everything out of the box.
- Next, cover your box. You may want to use materials such as wrapping paper, construction paper, or a paper bag.
- Decorate your Valentine box. You may use anything you want to decorate: markers, stickers, ribbon, glitter, buttons, etc. This box should show our class the things you love.
- Put your name on your box, so that friends delivering Valentines can easily tell that it's your box!
Six Flags Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club!
Please be sure to keep track of how many minutes your child is reading and record on the form sent home last week (see pictures below of the front and the back). If your child turns in this form filled out and signed before or on February 22, he/she will receive free admission to Six Flags. Thanks so much for continuing to encourage your child to read more and more at home!
Student-Led Conferences
We will be hosting student-led conferences next Thursday, February 21, between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Student-led conferences are a great way for your child to show you what he/she is learning in class. You will be able to view your child’s self-selected goals and progress towards these goals. Student-led conferences are a time for you to conference with your child. This time is set up for you to come with your child at your assigned time slot between the 3:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m.. Most conferences last between 10-15 minutes. Your child will have a checklist to help lead a meaningful discussion with you. Conferences will take place in your child's homeroom class.
“These type of conferences are emerging as a way to actively engage students in their learning process,” writes Donald G. Hackmann, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State University in ERIC Digest. According to Hackmann and other researchers, the following are benefits of student-led conferences:
· Students assume greater control of their academic progress.
· Students accept personal responsibility for their academic performance.
· Parents, teachers, and students engage in open and honest dialogue.
· Parents attend conferences at increased rates.
· Students learn the process of self-evaluation.
· Students develop organizational and oral communication skills.
We hope you are able to take part in this wonderful time with your child!
Please remember to continue to send a heavy coat with your
child in the morning. We go outside to recess at 10:45. The
temperature can still be very chilly when we go outside. You’re
more than welcome to send an extra jacket from home to leave
at school for those cool recess mornings. Please also write your child’s first and last name inside outerwear. Thanks!
Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House
The Pirate CFO Future Exploration class is collecting pop tabs to help benefit the Ronald McDonald house in Fort Worth. The money that is collected at the recycling center from the tabs is an amount that is a huge benefit to the Ronald McDonald house! Did you know from just the "pop tabs" collected in our area, the Fort Worth Ronald McDonald house receives between $5000-$6000 to help support the needs at the house? The aluminum tabs do not have to be only from "pop" cans. They can come from any aluminum can! Thank you for helping our Future Exploration students in supporting our community members!
Thank you for your help & support!
