Weekly Update
September 19, 2021
WEEK ONE DONE!
Hawks, we hope you all had a good first week back to school! By now you should be settling in with your classmates, finding routes to and from your classes and visiting the main office or counselor if you need to. We look forward to a great year and hope that everyone can help us to continue to follow the rules and safety protocol to keep all of our students and staff safe and healthy!
Bus Update and Transportation Solution
As shared earlier this school year, due to the nationwide school bus driver shortage, Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) has had to make several adjustments to school schedules and transportation options in order to provide as many students as possible with transportation to and from school. After extensive efforts to find more drivers, identify alternate transportation options and adjust school schedules, Humboldt Secondary/Open World Learning Bus routes M&Q remain without consistent drivers.
If your student(s) and family have been affected by this, we have sent a letter, email and call regarding next steps and how your student may receive metro transit passes. Again, this is for students on routes M & Q. If you are experiencing other issues with transportation, please stop into the front office and staff will work to answer any questions or concerns.
Humboldt and SPPS appreciate your patience during this time and thank you for your dedication to getting your students to school safely and on time.
Attendance Announcements
Welcome Back! School attendance is a key factor for keeping students on track academically. Humboldt recognizes that in order for your child to be successful in school, we will need support from both the home and school. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she attends school every day and on time. School begins promptly at 8:30 am and dismisses at 3:00pm
Attendance Procedures:
- Tardy to School: Students arriving to school after 8:30 a.m. are required to bring a note from a parent/guardian, stating the reason for their tardiness.
- Absences: Students absent from school one or more days. Parents/guardians are required to call the school Attendance Line (651-744-5533) to report a student absent. Also, parent/guardian needs to send a note with child stating the reason for the absence.
- Excused to leave the building: Students needing to leave school early must provide a written note from parent/guardian with the following information; date, time needing to leave, parent/guardian telephone number, and the reason for early dismissal. Students will then be given an excuse to leave the building. If a student fails to provide a signed note from parent, the school staff has been instructed to check a photo ID and the emergency contact information to ensure authorization before releasing the student. Parents PLEASE limit early pickups; students need every minute of their education to be successful in school.
- An Excused Absence or Tardy may include: Doctor’s visit, sickness, religious holiday, and extreme family emergency.
- An Unexcused Absence or Tardy may include: Overslept, missed the bus, car problems, traffic, needed at home, cold weather, and staying home to babysit.
For additional questions concerning attendance, please contact the Attendance Clerk, Miss Nina (651)744 -7203 or Attendance Intervention Specialist, Ms. Judy (651)744-5547.
Humboldt Athletics
Middle School Sports
We are excited to be able to offer middle school athletics this fall. As is the case with other school activities, there will be some changes that will allow students to participate in a modified athletics season.
Due to the nationwide shortage of school bus drivers, we are only able to provide after-school transportation for high school students at this time. This means that all SPPS middle school athletics will have a modified intramural season this fall. We wish we could compete against other schools, but we cannot do so without offering transportation. We also cannot ask parents to drive, as it would not be equitable for students who do not have this option.
In light of this change, the fall activity fee is being reduced from $30 to $5. Students will still need a current sports physical to participate in the fall season; please make an appointment with your physician or visit one of our SPPS Health Start Clinics.
The following fall sports will be offered at our school: Soccer, Flag Football and Volleyball
The season will begin on Monday, September 27.
For questions or concerns feel free to contact Middle School Athletic Director.

High School Sports
Humboldt in partnership with the Karen Organization of Minnesota hosted a free tournament, The Community Cup, for our boy's and girl's soccer teams. Matches were played against Washington Tech and the prize was a beautiful trophy for each winning team.
After two very tough and exciting games, our Lady Hawks walked away with the first title win. With no goals in regulation, the match went to a shootout where Humboldt was able to put on an exciting show for fans and take the win. The boys fell to the Eagles in a very close, physical, 2-1 game sending the Eagles home with the first trophy. We look forward to the event next year and hope to display both trophies in 2022!
