District Update(s)
A Note from the Humanities Coordinator
Hi CPS families,
We often hear questions about how families can help support students at home. One of the themes my colleagues and I are noticing relates to vocabulary knowledge. Students are coming to school knowing the meaning of fewer words than ever before. Students will often ask about the meanings of words we assumed they already knew. We are making adjustments to our instructional practices to do more with vocabulary development, but it got me thinking.
I started reflecting on my own children and what might account for this overall decrease in vocabulary knowledge. I wonder about the shift in children now watching more YouTube videos than television shows. I wonder about how much we all use technology in our daily lives, and how that might reduce the opportunities for rich conversation and vocabulary building. We may never know the root cause, but we have some tips for how to work on this important skill at home.
- Use sophisticated vocabulary at home when you are talking to children. Hope that they ask you what that word means. If they don't, draw their attention by asking, "Do you know what motivated means?"
- When children talk to you, say something back to them and insert a word that will make what they said richer and deepen their understanding. For example, "Oh, you had a substitute today? Hmm, did the class take advantage of that situation?" "Taking advantage means the class used an opportunity to be extra silly because they know your teacher wasn't in."
- Read aloud to children and stop at words that you think they might not know. Ask them about the word and then explain the word's meaning.
- Think aloud as you move through the world with children. Talk to them and with them. While you are waiting at a doctor or dentist appointment say, "This office is sterile." "I wonder if this clipboard has been disinfected." "Look at that intricate design on the wall."
Building vocabulary is all about exposure and conversation about words. The more you can play with language, the better!

Luce CAPT Help (Repost)
Dear Luce Families,
We are in danger of losing the ability to do quality events and programs outside of school hours due to low volunteer turnout. Please feel free to send this to friends.
A brief description of the positions/events we need help with:
- CAPT Vice President- this is a critical need to help share the load of the current team. This person would help run meetings, set priorities, and work with the e-board to lead events with other CAPT volunteers. Time commitment is probably 4-5 hours per month.
- Evening Activity Coordinator- Plan an evening event for parents typically held in March or April. Past events have included trivia and raffles. Time commitment 8 hours including the event night.
- Fun Run Coordinator- This position is one of the most important right now. Each May CAPT hosts a Canton-wide 5K. This event really needs to get started with planning and logistics NOW. Time commitment is 10-15 hours.
- Fun Run event team- there are a lot of items needed to get through for the fun run. Having a large team of volunteers will help. The time commitment is about 10 hours.
- Luce Carnival Team- we are trying to bring this event back in March but if we don't get planning and moving soon it would be hard. We do have a coordinator but we need the team behind them. Time commitment is about 5-6 hours.
- Luce Event Flyer Creator- help the event teams by creating flyers and marketing for each event. Time commitment is about 1 hour per event. We have a CANVA pro account to do this on.
- Luce CAPT social media and website creator- update and maintain our web presence. Our website is google suite and we currently have one Facebook page.

In addition to our needs above our 4th and 5th grade musical needs help. These opportunities can be held by any grade parent. In fact, it is helpful to have parents whose children are not involved in the show helping so that families can enjoy the performance. Our play is on 2/10 & 2/11. Click here for the signup genius.
Help needed includes:
- Ticket sales
- Concession sales/coordination (collecting donations, setting up etc)
- Cast-o-Gram Sales (creating the bags for each student, selling them at the event (preshow), and organizing them into bags for delivery at the cast party)
- Planning, Decorating, and Staffing the Cast party - if attending the party must be CORI'd and finger printed
- Green room supervision during the show- must get CORI'd and fingerprinted
