Principal's Greeting
Parents,
As many of you already know, each year the state asks school districts to provide a School Climate Survey to parents. This survey window opened on February 27. This survey information will help us to best address the needs of your child and family and foster a more successful and positive learning environment.
We ask that all parents complete the survey. The survey closes on April 7, 2023.
You can access the survey using PowerSchool Parent Portal. Follow these steps:
Navigate to the Parent Portal Login page: https://ccsdschools.powerschool.com/public/
Enter your Username and Password to login.
Under “Forms,” select “Parent School Climate Survey.”
Complete the survey and click “Submit.”
Note: Families should complete only one survey for each of their enrolled children.
Parents that are new to Parent Portal will have received an email with the access codes to set up and link their child to their parent portal account. If you are having trouble accessing your account, please contact our Data Clerk, Devon Gamble at devon_gamble@charleston.k12.sc.us
Your time and effort in completing this survey is greatly appreciated.
Ms. Rowehl

Health Curriculum Parent Meeting - March 8th 5:30-6:30pm
As many of you know, South Carolina requires students to take a quarter of health each year. Part of that Health Curriculum is a unit on Human Growth and Development. CCSD has put together a group of teachers that have been rigorously trained on the Human Growth and Development Curriculum that will be coming to Camp Road in the near future to implement this curriculum with the students who are currently taking Health.
In order to share this curriculum and meet the individuals who will be covering this curriculum with our students, this group will be hosting a Parent Meeting on March 8th in the Camp Road Gym. During this meeting parents will have the opportunity to view the curriculum and the activities, as well as ask questions.
All families are welcome to attend. We will be following up with an email to all of the families who currently have a student that is or will be taking health this semester. That email will contain the opt out form for any families who do not want their children to participate in the Human Growth and Development Curriculum.
Internet Safety Parent Night - March 23
Are you concerned about the amount of time your child is spending online or playing video games? Is your child a perpetrator or victim of cyber bullying? Do you suspect your child could be sexting? Do you want information on how to monitor/restrict their online activity? We will be hosting a parent information night on March 23rd at 6pm with Kenyetta Mitchell from the Internet Crimes Against Children division of the SC Attorney General’s office. Please mark your calendars to attend this important and informative event.

GIRLS NIGHT - March 29
On March 29th, Camp Road will be hosting its first ever Girls Night! This event is aimed at strengthening the female community here at Camp Road. We will have a panel of strong female women in the community here to speak to our girls, along with activities for team building and friendship. This event is open to female students in all grades, along with a female guardian (mom, grandmom, aunt, etc.) All adults guests need to be above 21.
Please RSVP for the event HERE.
CRMS "CHAMPS"!
Congratulations to our two CRMS “CHAMPS”, Jesse Cetoute and Kevon Heyward! These two 8th graders will represent our school in the CCSD CHAMP Awards Ceremony on April 4th. They are being recognized for their outstanding work ethic, strong character and contributions to a positive school climate. Way to go, Jesse and Kevon!
Parent Input Needed
Gentle Reminders
Do you need to pick your child up early?
We know that there are times when you need to pick your child up from school in the middle of the day for a doctor's appointment or some other event. When this pick up occurs during lunch/recess time, it limits the amount of adult supervision because the teacher needs to go with the student to unlock doors/cabinets. This is a safety concern! To alleviate this issue, we are asking that parents SEND A NOTE TO THE HOMEROOM TEACHER as to what time your child will be picked up. Therefore, the child can pack up belongings before lunch/recess.
Please do your best to NOT pick your child up during their lunch/recess time!
6th grade: 11:55 - 12:35
7th grade: 10:43 - 11:33
8th grade: 12:48 - 1:38
Car rider Procedures
Families! It would be very helpful if, when picking up your child(ren) at dismissal in the car line, to PLEASE pull up to the car in front of you. This way, we can maximize the number of students getting into cars and get through the line faster. Thank you!!
Mental Health Minute
The Charleston Dorchester Mental Health Center (CDMHC) provides emergency psychiatric care as well as counseling and psychiatric services for children, adolescents, adults and families. CDMHC has facilities in both Charleston and Dorchester counties, and their Charleston facility is conveniently located next to Home Depot in West Ashley. CDMHC’s emergency psychiatric care consists of an Assessment/Mobile Crisis Team that can be reached 24/7 at 843-414-2350 or 1-800-613-8379. In-person assessments for urgent or routine care are provided on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at either of their clinics. The Mobile Crisis unit can also be sent 24/7 anywhere in the community, except hospital emergency rooms, to assess anyone experiencing a psychiatric crisis. If you are in need of assistance but are concerned about cost, information provided under the Accessing Our Services section of the CDMHC website states that they provide services regardless of the ability to pay.
The CDMHC also works in conjunction with CCSD to provide mental health counselors in select schools. James Island Charter High School has two counselors who are employed by the CDMHC but see students at the high school for counseling sessions during the school day. Students in need of services can be referred by their guidance counselor, and after filling out the appropriate paperwork, they can usually schedule a session within a few weeks.
More information about the CDMHC can be found at https://www.charlestondorchestermhc.org/
Second Step at CRMS
National SEL Day is March 10th!
Uplifting Hearts, Connecting Minds Social emotional learning (SEL) changes lives—studies show that SEL improves well-being and academic outcomes, builds a positive school climate, and provides children with the necessary skills to excel in today’s workforce.
Attendance
Parents please send in notes for all absences. Medical notes excuse the absences and parent notes verify the absence. Ten parent notes are the maximum number allowed for the year. After 10 parent notes, a doctor's note will be required. If you have any questions, please email devon_gamble@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Keep Your Child on Track in Middle School: Pay Attention to Attendance
Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students access learning opportunities and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
DID YOU KNOW? WHAT YOU CAN DO?
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success. Make school attendance a priority.
- Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
- Help your teen maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try not to schedule dental and other related medical appointments during the school day.
- If your student must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
