PHS Update

Second Semester - Here We Go!
All right, everyone! Engines ready and here we go into the second semester. Hoping everyone had a good holiday break. We know it has been tough as many staff members struggle with health and family concerns. Out of respect for privacy, I won't get specific on all cases but please know we are thinking of you and are here to help if needed.
I have been told that there was some improvement in Richie Lemos's condition and that he would soon be breathing on his own, but I am getting third hand information. Please keep Richie in your thoughts.
We had two PHS giants pass away over the holiday break, Jim Giovando and Roy Lattimore. They each made remarkable and lasting contributions for students, actions and deeds that changed people into the adults they became. This is the same work that you do each day. Please see the obituaries below.
Susan Contini will be back with us toward the end of the week. She was out caring for her father, Anthony, who passed away recently. He sounds like he was a great man and I have included his obituary too as a reflection of a life well lived. Looking forward to seeing you back, Susan.
Don't forget the Crab Feed. See Barb Brooks for staff discount.

PHS-Casa Collaboration Continues...Anglers to MarS
In the best spirit of cooperation and collaboration on behalf of PCS students, the Marine Science (MarS) program at Petaluma HIgh and the United Anglers (UACG) at Casa Grande have been working closely together this year. Please read on for more from Mr. Tacata and Mr. Hubacker:
Last month, we wrapped up "Phase 1" of our program. Between September and early-November, Dan and I met bi-weekly --either in person or on the phone-- to plan the following:
- Dan gave a 4-hour Salmonid Biology course to 21 MarS students at the Fishery
- Dan's Advanced EnCR class came to PHS to give both MarS sections two 90-minute lessons on net-trapping and capture techniques
- Tacata ran two after-school salmonid ID review sessions to prep the 21 MarS participants for the NMFS Salmonid ID exam (taken at the fishery) - all 21 students passed!
- And Dan ran a final "net containment and skirmish line" training for the MarS kids at the Fishery right before the weekend of our UA and MarS fundraising dinners/silent auctions
In addition to transporting students to and from the Fishery, all MarS students had sufficient gear (waders, boots, head lamps, etc - we purchased gear for students who needed financial assistance) and set up a "Remind" phone tree to make sure they could get location and time updates for upcoming trapping events (I get info from Hubacker and relay it to MarS kids, usually the evening before or morning of a trapping event... kids are always "on call").
And, finally, between 11/17 and 12/17, PHS MarS students joined UACG students out on the Petaluma River Watershed for over a dozen salmon trap-tag-and-release events... It was an amazing experience for both UACG and MarS students as our students worked together to protect and conserve our native wildlife. I can tell you right now: this experience changed the lives of several of our students and it was worth all the work, the money, and the time Dan and I put into it. We couldn't be happier :)
This February, Dan and I will be rolling out "Phase II" of our collaboration: a couple of UACG students will join us on our February Monterey Expedition and, with help from our head counselors, we will start cross-enrolling our qualified (current) juniors into our EnCR and MarS programs for the 2018-19 school year. Later in March, Dan's Advanced EnCR class will be joining us at PHS for a 6 lesson joint Ichthyology unit and shark dissection... Tacata will be on stage for this one and I'm looking forward to it :)
We're excited to continue providing our kids with expanded opportunities for growth and learning and we will keep you all up-to-date with our struggles and successes... It's going to be an exciting New Year for our students and our programs and we're looking forward to continuing this wonderful collaboration.
Please check out the latest video capturing the work.
