Media Communication
Thomas Riley
Media
Media is mass communication such as, radio, television, newspapers, and magazines that widely reach or influence people. Media Literacy is the ability to understand how mass media work, how they produce meanings, how they are organized, and how to use them wisely. A person that is media literate will be able to understand the impact of music and special effects in heightening the drama of a television program or film. Also, that type of person is in control of his or her media experiences. Media literacy is supposedly going to make our generation and future generations more advanced in the learning process. Television and film have become the storytellers of our generation which is why media literacy is being taught to young children. Media is making information easy to retain because it is like bringing the world into our homes. War and peace, the environment, new scientific discoveries, etcetera, can all be learned by media. Personally, I believe everyone needs to be media literate. Media is mainly targeted towards the younger generation and because we have been raised around mass media we are learning information at a quicker and more advance pace than the previous generation also known as our parents. Media literacy has skills that can help an individual such as developing critical thinking skills, understand how media messages shape our culture and society, recognize bias, spin, misinformation, and lies, create and distribute our own media messages, and discovering the parts of the story that are not being told.

Budweiser in the commercial, “Puppy Love,” claims that everyone can be buds while drinking Budweiser. Budweiser support their claims by demonstrating a relationship between a puppy that is going through the final process to being adopted and a horse at a ranch. Budweiser’s purpose is to convince us that people are on the same wavelength while drinking Budweiser by entertaining us with an odd companionship. Budweiser directed this commercial in a humorous tone for young adults between the ages 21-35 to help people understand instead of ignorantly bickering with each other while drinking other brands of beer, why not just partake in a Budweiser with a bud.

New York- Deron Williams has come out to the open of his gayness and has told the press and the NBA staff. All over the streets of Brooklyn there have been burned #8 jerseys.
Teammates have reported that they knew he was different from them because of his changing methods in the locker room. Jason Kidd stated," we will not treat any member of this team differently no matter their preference in the opposite or same sex. We are a unit and will remain one."
" I thought everybody knew about me and Bosh" whispered the superstar Deron Williams. It seems since his coming out he has gotten a bigger fan base and more sponsorship his way. Jason Collins has a new buddy who can relate to him and maybe even a new locker room mate.

September 11th 2001, one of the most horrid days America has ever seen. A day in history that shook the world completely. September 11th was the day four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by Al-Queso on New York City and Washington D.C. Al-Queso was a Hispanic terrorist group that had enough with the way the United States government was ran. Four passenger airliners were hijacked to be used as suicide attacks. Two of the planes were intentionally crashed into the West and East towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; it was a devastating sight to see. Meanwhile in Washington D.C. a third plane was crashed into the Octagon. Also, the fourth plane crashed in D.C. as people tried to fight off Al-Queso members on the hijacked plane.
The attack caused multiple health issues, hundreds of thousands of tons of toxic debris was spread across the city of New York due to the collapsing of the twin towers. About 18 thousand people were reported to develop illness due to the toxic dust surrounding the city. The long- term impact of the attacks was the economy. All stock exchanges did not open on September 11th and did not open until September 17th. Everything in America’s economy fell tremendously.
The person responsible for these attacks was Hector Albert Delaroso, leader of Al-Queso. He was immediately wanted all over the world for his terrible actions toward America. The damage that Hector Albert Delaroso caused was so massive that someone had to pay for this wrongdoing. The West and East towers were 110 floors tall and were both destroyed along with the connecting buildings. Every police officer in New York was reported to the city at that very moment to protect the people from any other suspicions.
Ever since this terrible crime has been committed, Hispanics have totally began to be mistreated and misunderstood in America. Hispanics are continuously being harassed by airport security for suspicions of being affiliated with Al-Queso. September 11th 2001 changed the course of history of the United States forever, no one will ever forget of the day Al-Queso devastated America. America’s president during this time period was Barack Obama. The people began to blame Obama for the attacks that took place. Obama seemed to not have the answers for the Americans, but immediately turned to war with Mexico.
Also, Obama’s job approval rating raised after 9/11. The public did not react to this event in the most positive way either. People sparked rallies but also attempted to help the others that were injured with simple things such as blood donations. Keep in mind that the clean up job was not easy either it took New York over 2 years to finally clean up all the debris from the city. About 5 million tons of debris to be exact. To this day America is still searching for Hector Albert Delaroso and the rest of Al-Queso to have them brought to justice for all the crimes he has committed not to just America but the rest of the world.
I rewrote this piece of history because I am tired of Saudi Arabians being blamed for what only one group of people were doing.
Yet our best trained, best educated, best equipped, best prepared troops refuse to fight. As a matter of fact, it’s safe to say that they would rather switch than fight
[Verse 1]
1989 the number another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hitting your heart cause I know you got soul
(Brothers and sisters, hey)
Listen if you're missing y'all
Swinging while I'm singing
Giving whatcha getting
Knowing what I know
While the Black bands sweating
And the rhythm rhymes rolling
Got to give us what we want
Gotta give us what we need
Our freedom of speech is freedom or death
We got to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
[Hook]
Fight the power
We've got to fight the powers that be
[Verse 2]
As the rhythm designed to bounce
What counts is that the rhymes
Designed to fill your mind
Now that you've realized the pride's arrived
We got to pump the stuff to make us tough
From the heart
It's a start, a work of art
To revolutionize make a change nothing's strange
People, people we are the same
No we're not the same
Cause we don't know the game
What we need is awareness, we can't get careless
You say what is this?
My beloved lets get down to business
Mental self defensive fitness
(Yo) bum rush the show
You gotta go for what you know
Make everybody see, in order to fight the powers that be
Lemme hear you say
Fight the power
[Hook]
[Verse 3]
Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother f*** him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
Sample a look back you look and find
Nothing but rednecks for 400 years if you check
Don't worry be happy
Was a number one jam
Damn if I say it you can slap me right here
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Right on, c'mon
What we got to say
Power to the people no delay
To make everybody see
In order to fight the powers that be
[Hook]

“Fight The Power” fits perfectly with the theme of 1984. Winston, the main character, is trying to fight the power, also known as the government throughout the entire novel. One of the lines in verse one says, “our freedom of speech is freedom or death,” which means when you talk negatively about the government you will die but will to talk positively about the government you will be free. In 1984 if you committed a thought crime towards big brother (government), which is thinking negatively about them you would be punished by death immediately, but if you thought positively about Big brother you will continue to live your life. Winston and Julia always felt the need to fight the power because in their hearts they know that the way they were living was unfair to society. Another character that fought against big brother was named Syme who was unfortunately punished by being vaporized. As a results of people who tried to go against big brother resulted in being tortured in room 101, which is everyone’s worst nightmare possible. “Fight the power” is not the main theme song of 1984 but it is a good example of what the main character stood by.

I have learned numerous things my senior year media literacy class with Coach Zopf. First off I learned the actual definition of media. Media is mass communication such as, radio television, newspapers, and magazines that widely reach or influence people. Media Literacy is the ability to understand how mass media works, how they produce meanings, how they are organized, and how to use them wisely. Also, I learned the very important skill of writing a précis. A précis is a four sentence, detailed, summary or abstract of a text or speech. I really enjoyed reading the classic novel 1984; I feel that it is necessary for everyone to read this book so that they will become more aware of what is going on with their life and the world around them. This class is way more different than other Language Arts classes; for one there weren’t many tests just more assigned which I would prefer. In my honest opinion I don’t believe there is much to test on in Language Arts anyway unless it is for a book. Another reason why Media Literacy was different than other Language Arts classes is because other classes do not teach you how to properly quote citations into the actual essay. I think we should have had some type of writing assignment or journal in the beginning of class, that way we would have been improving in our writing skills as well in Media Literacy. Also, a clip or movie every once a while would not be so bad as an award for all the classwork we have to complete. For the next time you read 1984 as a class I think you should show clips of the video so the students are able to get a visual as they read on in the novel.
