Lead learner Highlights

Dear KP Families,

I cannot believe we only have roughly a month of school before summer break! Tis the season for celebration! We have our spring musical this weekend (please attend), Teacher Appreciation next week, and spring concerts on the horizon. As we prepare to end the 2019-2020 school year, I invite you to check in with your child about their progress and seek out teachers as needed. We still offer our homework club on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays and are running Saturday academy if students need to quiet place to receive support as they catch up on any missing assignments.

This is the national week to appreciate our teachers and hope that you will take some time to bring an item for the annual PTO breakfast (see below). We also encourage you to work with your child to write a note of appreciation to a KP teacher or staff member before this week ends.

Happy Weekend! I'm rooting for the sun to make a lengthy appearance.

Letters about Literature Contest

Three of the nine state finalists for this year’s Letters about Literature Contest attend KP. Sarah C., Grace W-G & Rory A. invited their teachers Mrs. Harrel, Mrs. Perry, and Mrs. Kulvinskas to celebrate with them at the state capitol building last Friday. This is the second year in a row that KP has had multiple finalists for this contest.

Our very own Sarah C. is advancing on to the national competition. Her letter conveyed the powerful impact of the characters from the book Clockwork Angel. You can read all of the essays here.

KP Chess Club News from Coach Lumelksky

In addition to the 5th Place finish in the K-9 Nationals Blitz Championship, the KP Team finished 15th out of 42 teams at US Chess Jr. High Nationals, K-8 Championship Section, taking the 15th and final team placement of the event. This is a remarkable effort for a team with an average rating in the bottom 20% of the Championship Section, which consisted of nearly 300 players from at least 30 states. The team scored 5 upset wins and 3 upset draws against substantially higher rated players, as part of its 13.5 point tally and come from behind placement finish. KP was the only Connecticut team to participate at this event.

Eighth grader Ethan Striff-Cave, who led team scoring in the K-8 with 4.5 points and three upset wins, also won 1st under 1300. Eighth grader Sam Lumelsky scored 4.0. Sixth grader Jake Lumelsky scored 3.0. Seventh grader Lucas Kollen scored 2.0.

After the first two rounds, the team only managed two points and fell to 24th place among the 42 competing teams. However, ahead of the seventh and final round, the team bounced back to 16th place with 9.5 combined points from rounds 3, 4, 5 and 6. Round 6 included three upset wins by Ethan, Lucas and Jake.

Ahead of the final seventh round, the team stood one spot shy of the final 15th placement. However, in Round 7, KP scored a miraculous 2.5 points. Ethan scored an upset win, Jake scored an upset draw, and Sam won his final game. The final round total propelled King Philip into the 15th spot to end the tournament.

These are King Philip first (Blitz) and second National team titles.

Public Act 16-189

We believe that it is vital for all students in West Hartford Public Schools to be able to efficiently and effectively use digital tools that empower them in all phases of the learning process, including research, problem solving, content creation, communication, and collaboration. We also believe that we must be committed at all times to protecting students' privacy and providing them with a powerful and safe educational experience. To that end, the West Hartford Public Schools follow the legal requirements of Public Act 16-189 to promote the safety and security of all students and staff.

In compliance with Connecticut State Law, we update online programs used within the district that house student data. The programs may be used district-wide, in a very small number of classrooms, or with individual students. The list will be updated each time the district enters into a new contract where student data is housed. For more information on the specifics of Public Act 16-189 and updates of vendor agreements, visit www.whps.org/pa189."
