Hi Everyone,

Hope you are doing well and enjoying our lovely spring weather. It is nice to have a true spring with rain for flowers and mild temperatures.

On Sunday, May 2nd we had another fun and productive Puppy Party. The weather was nice and the dogs ran and played so well together.

Thank you to Alice Alford for conducting our CGC and trick dog tests. Over the years she has tested many if our members' cavaliers. We greatly appreciate her spending most of the day working to help others achieve their certificates. I know 4 dogs received their CGC and 1 earned their novice trick dog title. Proud of all our 4 legged members for these new titles. Also want to thank Kay Trade and Gwyneth for their wonderful demonstration of some of the more advanced tricks.

Cavaliers of Greater Atlanta wants to send a warm welcome to our new members, Victoria Babcock and Jess Hillman, and we're very glad they were able to attend the party.

All in all, I think a fun time was had by all. We will be working on the location and date of the next fun day.

Time to get ready for our 2021 Specialty. We have three breeder judges, so get those puppies lead broken and tune up the older guys. Mark your calendar for August 28- 29, 2021 and we hope you will plan to join us for the specialty and our annual Saturday night social. The social will be held at the Drury Inn, our host hotel. DOG APPETITE LOSS

Temporary loss of appetite for a day or two in dogs is nothing to be alarmed at. However, prolonged appetite loss is usually caused by some underlying health problems. This page looks at some possible causes of appetite loss in dogs and what we can do to entice our dogs to eat.

Dogs usually are hearty eaters, although there are some finicky eaters as well. Most of the time, dogs enjoy chowing down their food. They even find stale food or garbage delicious!

Just like us, however, a dog occasionally may lose his appetite due to stress, a lack of exercise, or even a change in the weather.

Temporary appetite loss in dogs is not serious - dogs are by nature hardy animals and can stay healthy and active even if they don't eat for 48 hours. Believe it or not, dogs are very in tune with their bodies - when they do not feel so well, or when they feel there is a need for internal cleansing (like detoxification), they fast on their own.

However, if your dog suddenly loses her appetite or stops eating altogether for more than two days, coupled with weight loss, then you should take her to the vet for a check-up. The dog's appetite loss is most likely caused by some underlying health problem.

Causes of Appetite Loss in Dogs

As you can imagine, there are many possible reasons why a dog may lose her appetite. Some common ones include:

Stress

Dogs are animals of habits - they like routines and dislike stress! Therefore, when a dog's daily routines are disturbed, or when there is stress in her living environment, she may lose her appetite. For example, when there is a new dog in the family, or when she is put in the kennel while her owners are on vacation.

Digestive Problems

Digestive problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and so on, can also cause a dog to lose her appetite. If your dog stops eating because of diarrhea, don't force food down her throat. Fasting in this case is actually good for your dog. Just remember to encourage her to drink water to prevent dehydration.

Bacterial or Viral Infections

Infectious diseases usually cause fever, which in turn may cause a loss in appetite. In this case, it is also natural and beneficial for the dog to fast. Temporarily going without food allows the body to devote less energy to digestion and more to fight the bugs that make him sick.

Respiratory Diseases

Some dogs may lose their appetites when they suffer from an upper respiratory disease (e.g. asthma, kennel cough). Perhaps they don't want to eat because they cannot smell their food!

Other Health Problems

Other health problems that may cause dog appetite loss include:

• Dental or periodontal diseases
• Pancreatitis
• Kidney failure
• Urinary tract infections
• Severe worm infestations
• Addison's disease
• Cancer

As you can see, dog appetite loss can be caused by quite a few different diseases. It is therefore essential to get a medical check-up if your dog stops eating for over 48 hours.
