This Week at Royal
March 8 - 14
Friendly Reminder! Spring Break is March 15 - 19!
Hello Falcons,
As you have probably heard, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order. This executive order rescinds most of the Governor's earlier executive orders related to COVID-19. Effective next Wednesday, all businesses of any type may open to 100% capacity. Additionally, this order ends the statewide mask mandate in Texas. Businesses may still limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols at their own discretion.
Royal ISD is in the process of reviewing the order and awaiting updated public health guidance from the Texas Education Agency. Until further notice, RISD’s COVID safely protocols and procedures will continue to be followed. The item is included on the March 8 School Board Meeting Agenda. Click here to access the 3/8/21 Zoom meeting. Click here to access the meeting agenda.
In addition, the state of Texas has added public school employees to those eligible to receive the COVID vaccine. The photo to the left of this message is of Falcon employee Janine Marie Aristeiguieta from the day she received her vaccine. RISD IT Director Mike Nicholas stated, "I got mine at Brookshire Brothers and it was so fast that I blinked and almost missed it!" Click here to learn more about the COVID vaccine.
Have a wonderful week!

Early College High School (ECHS) Applications
Did you know that Royal ISD students can earn their associates degree while still in high school?
Royal ECHS allows students to receive an Associates’ Degree when they graduate from Royal ISD, at no cost to their families. The program allows them the opportunity to complete a Bachelors degree just two years after high school if they choose to do so. The early application window is open from March 3 until April 16.
Click here to download the application. Completed applications should be emailed to the Director of Advanced Academics (mbaker@royal-isd.net) or submitted to the student's Junior High Counselor (sperrow@royal-isd.net).
FEMA Winter Storm Assistance
On February 19th, President Biden approved a Major Disaster Declaration for the State of Texas authorizing FEMA to provide Individual Assistance to 77 counties. FEMA’s Individual Assistance (IA) program provides financial assistance and to eligible individuals and households who have uninsured and underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs for their primary residence.
The program is not a substitute for insurance and cannot pay for all losses caused by a disaster. You can, however, apply for assistance after having filed an insurance claim if you have unmet needs that FEMA may find to be eligible.

Texas Disaster Impacts Self-Reporting Survey
Was your home or property damaged during last week’s severe weather? If so, please complete the Texas Disaster Impacts Self-Reporting Tool.
The objective of this survey is to identify damages across Texas, to help emergency management officials across the state gain an understanding of damages that have occurred during the recent winter weather.
Please submit one survey per impacted address.
Reporting damage to Emergency Management is a voluntary activity, is not a substitute for reporting damage to your insurance agency, and does not guarantee disaster relief assistance.

Scam of the Week: Shipping Scam Spoofs “Dhl Express”
Many of us are used to receiving messages from shipping companies, so cybercriminals use similar emails as phish bait. Let’s take a look at a recent shipping-themed phishing attack and see if you can spot the red flags:
Sent from “Dhl Express”, the email claims that you have something waiting for you at your local post office. The message states “To receive your parcel, Please see and check attached shipping documents.” and it includes a .html file as an attachment. If you open the attachment, a web page displays that looks like a blurred-out Excel spreadsheet. Covering this blurred image is a fake Adobe PDF login window with your email address already populated in the username field. If you enter your password and click “View PDF Document” your email address and password will be sent straight to the bad guys.
How many red flags did you see? Remember the following tips:
- Look for poor grammar and capitalization. For example, the sender name “Dhl” should be “DHL”. Also, in the body of the email, the word “Please” is in the middle of a sentence, so this should be lowercase.
- Check the file type. The email attachment is a .html file, but most legitimate documents are shared as PDFs, spreadsheets, or word documents. HTML files are designed to be opened in a web browser, much like a link to a website.
- Watch out for anything out of the ordinary. An Adobe PDF login window blocking what appears to be a Microsoft Excel file is quite unusual.
