PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
They Did It!
If you are a parent of a 5th grader, you were privileged to witness magic on Thursday night. The 5th graders performed their original musical for a live audience for the first time in years. The musical was created completely from scratch by students, under the leadership and instruction of Katie Borden (music teacher) and Kelli Scarpa (art teacher). Everything was generated by students - the script, music, lyrics, scenery, costumes, and most importantly, the moral. The students took this opportunity to share an important message that showed that adults can learn from kids too. At the end of the musical a character states, “We accomplish more when we work together.”
Fifth graders were a testament to working together to create something greater than its parts. If you think about it, how does an entire 5th grade, composed of four separate classes and 115 students, create something together and collaborate? The logistics themselves are difficult because each class has art or music at a different time, which certainly makes communication and collaboration difficult. In addition, 115 students have 115 different ideas, perspectives, and thoughts about what to incorporate into the program. You would think that collaboration would be impossible.
The 5th graders utilized the skills they have learned this year at GRE to collaboratively create something great. They listened and communicated with others. They learned that sometimes their own ideas may be better; sometimes others’ ideas are better; and sometimes combined ideas are better. The 5th graders learned that different ideas and perspectives can make things better by taking pieces and parts of ideas to create something new.
So, we thank you for allowing us to learn from students this year. What did we learn from 5th graders? We were reminded and saw first hand that differences can bring us together. We learned that differences in perspective and mind can come together. We learned that listening can still occur even when there is passion for our own ideas. We have learned that we can still have joy together and persevere during a pandemic.
Thank you 5th graders! Well done! You can watch the video of the daytime performance HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w4KGbE-YU4
Sincerely,
Pete Kurty, Ed. D

GRE ANNOUNCEMENTS
DCS Dodgeball Tonight
Come root on our 5th grade and staff dodgeball teams compete in the annual DCS dodgeball tournament at Coffman football field on Friday, May 13 at 7pm. You can find more information HERE.
Collaboration, teamwork, and inclusion are values that are important to the positive and safe learning environment at GRE. We continually think about the inclusive experience that we want to foster for all students. Therefore, we designed a structure for all students to participate in a capacity that was inclusive and supportive.
Teams were created by randomly selecting all interested student names from a hat. Although students did not select their teammates, they supported one another and encouraged them. Each team competed in a bracket until one male and one female team remained. Those two teams combined to create our 5th grade team to represent GRE at the DCS tournament. The students that did not choose to participate encouraged all the teams that took the risk to participate, not knowing who their teammates would be.
We focused on the message and purpose of the dodgeball tournament. Although winning is certainly a component, the primary purpose is for a greater cause. The DCS dodgeball tournament this year is designed to raise awareness and funding for the Honor Flight program. At GRE, we make this a learning opportunity for students about how our teamwork can be used for a great cause.
Good luck to our 5th grade team on Friday, May 13th!
