Cougar Courier

Greetings from Dr. Garcia-Groves!

September 10, 2022

September is here, and we are almost a month into school which means progress reports will be coming later this week. Now is a good time to check in with your scholars and their teachers and see how they are progressing. It is particularly important for our middle school parents to discuss assignment completion and effort with their children. There is an expectation for increased independence at the middle school level, and we need our scholars to begin to take ownership of their learning.

We welcomed our newest Cougars to the building on September 7th. Our Pre-K scholars had a great first week of school and we are excited for them to join the Cougar family.

We are wrapping up i-Ready diagnostic testing this week which provides valuable data about where scholars are academically. In addition to i-Ready data, our teachers also use various assessments in the classroom to best meet scholars' needs. Together, all of these assessments provide insight into our scholars' abilities, areas of strength and areas of growth.

While all of our IB learner attributes are taught simultaneously, we continue to highlight an attribute of the month for you to explore with your scholar(s). Our attribute for September is principled. Some practical ways to discuss this attribute includes following the dress code, school-wide procedures and expectations, taking care of their electronic devices, being a good friend and helping others.

Have you completed your application for free and reduced lunch/textbook assistance? This must be completed every year. Here is the link We are one of the few states that charge families textbook fees, and this is an opportunity reduce those fees for qualifying families.

Our athletic teams have several events this week, and we are excited to see them in action. Cross country has a home meet on Monday, volleyball is away and football is away. We are still waiting on paperwork for our soccer teams to begin practicing. We apologize for the delay to the start of the season.

We are currently in need of a Design, Music/choir and Band/orchestra teacher. If you know of anyone who might be interested in these positions, please email me at

Nelson's Fundraiser THIS Friday

CIA is hosting a Nelson's fundraiser on Friday, September 16th from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm. Funds from this will go toward positive behavior reward field trips throughout the year. Chicken is $9.00 and potatoes are $4.00. If you have any questions, please contact Joshua Schultz.

Dress Code

I want to take a moment and remind parents that we have a dress code. Spandex shorts are not allowed. CIA shirts can be worn any day and pant colors are black, blue and khaki. Scholars should not be wearing sweatpants to school (unless it is part of their athletic uniform or spirit wear). We appreciate your help with making sure scholars adhere to the dress code.

We are in need of uniform clothes for our Cougar Closet , particularly for our older scholars. If you have any clothes you would like to donate, please bring them to the main office. Thank you!
