From our Music Department
We LOVE music in February! There are so many great Valentine's Day songs to be sung, and such cool ways to incorporate our curriculum into them! In addition to that, check out what we are doing in your child's grade this month!
First Grade: We are reading the Mr. Everybody's Musical Apartment series! First graders can label and perform the notes C, D, and E on the bells. We are experiencing form through movement to music in dances like "Heel, Toe," and "Shake Them Simmons Down," which is a fun square dance! We also learn some Spirituals and what those songs meant to the slaves.
Second Grade: Second Graders are learning about how different musical symbols can change the music. Tied notes can connect notes over bar lines, and they know that two quarter notes tied together have the same sound as a half note. We will be discussing the Underground Railroad and some secret messages hidden in the Spiritual "Follow The Drinking Gourd."
Third Grade: Recorders are in, as I'm sure you've heard! This is one of the most exciting parts of music for third graders! They are learning how to read and play B, A, G, and low D and E to some familiar songs. They can also use these instruments to accompany themselves! We encourage the students to keep their recorders at school, although they are allowed to bring them home to practice if they can remember to bring them back for their next music class. Mrs. Majeski and Mrs. Miller's classes have music on Mondays and Thursdays, Miss Sutter's class has music on Tuesday and Friday, and Mr. Rasmussen's class has music on Wednesday and Friday. ***Some parents have asked about keeping a recorder at home. We definitely love that idea, but it is not necessary. Please note that if you do this, our third graders now have GERMAN recorders instead of the Baroque recorders of past years, so make sure you buy a German recorder for consistency. Of course, purchasing a recorder for home is not a requirement at all and we do not expect anyone to buy one for home.***
Fourth Grade: We are learning about Beethoven this month! He's such a cool composer and he did so much of his composing while unable to hear what he wrote. In addition to learning about his life, music, and the Classical period, fourth graders will be playing his "Ode to Joy" on recorders.
Fifth Grade: We are continuing with our African Drumming unit. This unit takes weeks, but incorporates the idea of performing music through aural communication and what it takes to be a community. Our drumming uses djembes, tubanos, shekeres, gingoqui, and cowbell, and to complete our performance we also have recorders, singing, and dancing. This might be their favorite part of music so far!
