The Star
Ruby Bridges - where the STARS come to shine!
Hello from the principal's desk!
9/6/2017
I hope you had a lovely and long weekend and found ways to cool off. I talked to a lot of kids about their weekend and a lot of them said they spent it poolside. Enjoy those moments with your kiddos, they won't be this young forever!
Picture day is THIS Thursday, Sept 7. Make sure to dress them up! We will have a makeup day later next month, in case you don't like the pictures they take or if they were absent.
I wanted to start a regular "Get to know a Ruby Star" feature on our website. Here is my first crack at it - an interview with Mr. Lundholm. What do you think? This might be the start of a podcast to hear voices from Ruby. I hope you like it :).
Mandie Cline, our amazing STEAM coordinator, has a donor's choose project up online. Can you donate $5 to it? Maybe $100? Can you share on your Facebook and Twitter feed? I told her to put some stuff up on Donor's Choose and our community would get it funded. Can you try for me? Here is the link to share widely. - https://www.donorschoose.org/project/flexing-our-steam-studio-brains/2750581
One last note - do you know about our afterschool program, LEAPS? They operate here at Ruby and are a great, easy and affordable program. Look below for more information about their program!
With gratitude,
Jesse Woodward

Hello from Mr. Lundholm
I’d like to thank all the Ruby Bridges teachers and families again for welcoming me into the community. Again on Back to School Night, I felt a really warm reception from parents and guardians. The beginning of the year is a whirlwind, but I’m really happy to be back to school at Ruby Bridges.
- Buttercup the cow and Oreo the calf were huge hits last Friday. Kids came up to me all day hitting me with facts like, “Mr. Lundholm, did you know that a cow can hold up to 40 gallons of milk?!” All of our kids seemed to be amazed by the cow; many of them had never seen one before in person. Among the facts kids learned: what the material on cows’ hooves is made of, how long a cow’s tongue is (a foot!), how many stomachs a cow has (4!), and many of the different products made from milk.
- We will be starting Peace Makers back up soon! Stay tuned for details.
- We’ve reached out to Encinal High School to talk with them about helping us as we roll out some form of Restorative Justice at Ruby Bridges. Two of our brave teachers have agreed to allow us to pilot circles in their classes, as we figure things out. If other folks are interested, contact Mr. Lundholm.
- Getting out to see classes has been great. I think I’ve stopped in to every class except two of the kindergarten classes, and I’ve been impressed. From drawings of the eclipse to Native American flute performances to interactive math games to activities that help students take notes and share information, there are clearly awesome things going on in our learning community every day.

- Lunch supervision - We had our first new lunch supervisor come today! Thank you! However, we need more adults during lunch to help keep our campus safe. Want to come and play basketball or four square during recess? Hang out with your Kindergartner or 5th grader and keep an eye on them and their friends during lunch? Come on out and help us during lunch supervision!
- School Site Council - I heard from 3 parents interested in this committee, and need about 3 more. This is one of the most important groups on campus with the least amount of responsibility and time commitment! Come on people!!! The SSC meets 6 times throughout the year after school, and is composed of Ruby staff and parents. We set school budget, look at school goals, and do really important work. I think I need 2 or 3 more parents. Email me!
- Garden upkeep - We are partnering with Project Peace East Bay to get our garden in order. We then want to keep it up, build new planter boxes, and maybe get a program going. Do you have a green thumb and a desire to work with kids? Let me know! We just made a date for another work party, November 4th. Put it on your calendars.
Hello from the Ruby Bridges PTA
Join the PTA and have fun while helping your kids and your community. We have not met our goal of 100 members yet this year, we need every family involved! Email us at RubyBridgesPTA@gmail.com for more information. Together we can make this a year to remember!

I have been out here the last couple of days and have to say - you all are doing a much better job!!! Good work!

Hello from STEAM Lab
Hello STARS!
The STEAM Studio is shaping up to be quite a makerspace! Our 3D printer is set up and ready for experimenting. The Lego Wall baseplates arrived, the wall is assembled, and now I’m going to hang it up! Along with the Lego Wall, I will be adding a chalk board area, a post-it note display, and peg boards for tools. Right now the Studio is in need of all kinds of materials and tools donations! Items needed are as simple as tools from around the house to complex maker items. Please stop by the Studio (room 401) to check out some of the items on our Wish List! We are looking for items like old hammers, screw drivers, coffee filters, straws, etc. among other things to get our Studio rolling! Over in the Lab (room 402), the Science Foss kits arrived and the furniture is accounted for but it will take another week to get it ready for class rotations. Full STEAM Ahead!
