Newsletter Change

Welcome back to the school! I am looking forward to an awesome school year. Over the summer I took some time to reflect on what and how things have been done in the past and how they can be done to better serve our faculty, families and students. One of the changes starts with this newsletter. In the past it has gone out on the 1st and 15th of each month. While the gap between those date is not large, it still allowed for many more emails in between, filling your inboxes unnecessarily. My commitment this year is to send out this email every Friday for the upcoming week, thereby hopefully reducing the number of emails you receive from SJE.

School Office

I am thrilled to have Amy Schlaudroff in the school office full time this year. Having her now allows me to once again be able to focus on the functions of my job that I was called to do and am responsible for. It allows me to focus even more on classrooms, kids, faculty, staff and you more than I have in the past.


Many of the functions and jobs I performed over the last year or so are now being shifted or have been shifted to Amy. One of the most obvious to you is the tuition and money side of school. If you have questions about your tuition in FACTS/Renweb or other financial matters, please contact Amy. She is very well versed in that area as well as virtually every office function. We spent the summer transitioning those functions, making sure she was ready as soon as school began.


I value the relationship I have with all of you and know that good, strong relationships are key for your kids to have a successful time at SJE. I'm looking forward to building on the relationship we already have and make it even better.


I really think you'll enjoy working with Amy as much as I do. I am looking forward to an awesome year of great things.

Begins the week of August 20th.

School Theme T-shirts- Juan 3:16

We will once again be selling school theme t-shirts to benefit kids in Central and South America (via Lutheran Heritage project Juan 3:16) by giving them the book "A Child's Garden of Bible Stories. Books cost $5 each and a portion of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales along with a Thrivent Action team along with any other money we receive will fund this project. Last year we sent almost 100 of these books to children in Papua New Guinea. Can we do more this year? Prayerfully yes! Watch for more info to follow once school starts. Help us spread the good news of Jesus and showing there is a Real. Present. God for these children.

Volunteering at SJE

The Volunteer Scholarship provides a maximum award of $400 per student. Your family may apply for a Volunteer Scholarship for each child in kindergarten through eighth grade to further reduce your final tuition balance. The accumulation of hours begin during the 18-19 school year and are awarded during the 19-20 school year. To qualify for a Volunteer Scholarship, you need to:

  1. Volunteer a minimum of five (5) hours per child.

  2. Complete the required volunteer hours during the previous school year (June 1, 2018 through May 31, 2019) to fulfill the requirements of this scholarship and not for another school purpose (i.e. class trip fundraisers). These hours will count for and be awarded the following school year.

Hours volunteered will be tracked in Renweb and can be seen on your Parentweb page in the service hours section.

The Lutheran SGO for SJE

It's that time again to have a conversation about our SGO. We have many families that have filled out applications requesting funds to assist with their school tuition. This is a great way to help them. It allows the donor to donate funds to the SGO and receive a 50% Indiana state tax credit. If your donation is large enough, you can carry it over up to 8 tax years. Our need this year as of now is $18,000.00. Please consider giving. There are so many ways to do so and more are coming in early 2019. Please visit the website for more info.

Little Free Libraries Coming to SJE

I am super excited to announce that coming to each SJE campus are Little Free Libraries. Mike Cress, a school parent is building them. Once they are done, Jaime Hardy will customize them (school colors, logo name on them). I am thankful for families stepping up to make this happen. Here is a link (click here) to their website if you want to learn more. As soon as they are done and placed, I'll initiate a PR campaign to let the community know they are here.


Eventually I would like to "plant" more in the community as could be supported. I understand that Monroeville has two and supposedly one coming to Hoagland. Hoagland is where I would like to plant one if there is not one going there. It's all about promoting literacy in the communities we serve. It's what schools should be doing and this is a great way to do it.

SJE Endowment

The SJE endowment fund has been around for some time. It is finally at a point that the school can begin using it. That means more now than ever before. contributions made to this fund, make a difference. Also, at the beginning of this school year, the Lutheran Foundation ties grant funds the school receives to donations made to our endowment. In other words, every dollar donated to the SJE endowment is, one, matched into our endowment and, second is a dollar available for the school via the day school grant. In the past that amount has averaged $23,000 each school year. The funds were used for technology upgrades as well as any other classroom or school needs.

This grant, and the endowment fund have become very valuable to the school. So, please consider giving to our endowment fund so that the school has money to apply for to be used in an upcoming school year and long term from our endowment fund.
