Ebert Updates
Dear UMAC Parents,
This week, we are excited to begin our first week of guided reading and literacy stations. After modeling our expectations of each station, our students have demonstrated the ability to complete the tasks independently. These differentiated tasks will provide our students the support to grow as readers. We will be monitoring their work by collecting their reader’s notebook each week. Please ask your child what skills they are learning throughout the week at our literacy stations.
Have a great week,
April Ebert
Reading
To support our MAP testing this week, our team learned how to change our words and change our GROWTH MINDSET. Growth mindset allows our students to open their minds to empower their thinking. For example, in the past a student might have said, “this is too hard.” Now, they are going to say, “this might take some time.” We will continue to encourage our students to /develop a new way of thinking.
Writing
Last week in writing students focused on the trait of Ideas. We discussed ways to find a topic and how to create a strong idea that sends a clear message to readers. Students practice scoring sample writing pieces as they became familiar with their Idea rubric. We also listened to an author, Betsy Franco, share with us how she comes up with her ideas and no ideas are “weird” if we care about them! This week we will discuss the trait of Organization.
Math
New friends: This week in math, our students are learning how to apply the inverse relationship of subtraction to addition. They are talking with their teammates as we work through this strategy by sharing how adding/subtracting is a partnership. This is important for them to know as we review column addition and subtraction since this will support their accuracy.
Old friends: Our mathematicians will be learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators. As we discussed at Parent Night, it is extremely important for the students to know their multiplication facts in order to make this skill less difficult. We appreciate your support at home in helping your child master these facts!
Science
Last Friday, our team used their scientific thinking in our culminating activity dissecting owl pellets. Although many of our friends were initially hesitant, their curiosity led them to become an active member searching for clues in their owl pellet. The team was shocked to discover the skeleton bones inside such a tiny pellet.
