Transdisciplinary Theme: Where We Are in Place & Time
An exploration of our orientation in place and time; of our personal histories and geographies; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives
In 4th grade, students are inquiring into the central idea that humans have moved around and settled our planet. One of the lines of inquiry explored in this unit is related to the physical features of a location, and how these can attract to or repel from that location. 4th graders also explore lines of inquiry related to the development and impact of regions and boundaries on migration, as well as the opportunities that inspire humans to migrate and settle in new locations. The activities supporting this inquiry have been varied and meaningful, including videos, image prompts, research, class discussions, and exploration of maps. Through these activities, students develop a deep understanding of the history and motivations for human migration throughout time.
In 2nd grade, students are inquiring into the central idea that significant events in a person's life shape who they are. This includes an inquiry into what makes an event significant, factors within an event that lead to consequences, and the impact of a person's actions on others. This unit is tightly aligned with Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop, as students read stories of significant events in people's lives, and write "small moment" stories based on significant events in their own lives. Daily read-alouds during this unit lead to class discussions around various factors in the stories, and how these factors have consequences. For their summative project, 2nd graders are publishing a significant small moment story of their own, and reflecting on craft moves they have used as writers which demonstrate the significance of the event.
