"Just" for CMS - Week of 2/8/16

Weekly update of all happenings at CMS

Important Tech info For Parents

I was tagged in a FB post the other day, and as the parent of a 6th grader with a cell phone, I found the info to be very interesting. I thought I would share it. I deal with phone, FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc, etc, etc every day and most of you probably do as well. Please keep this information handy as you monitor what your child is doing on technology. The second list really something you may want to keep an eye out for.

What is ICU

Over the past few weeks, some of you may have received texts and emails about your student being on the ICU list. Don't worry. If they are on the ICU list, it's not a bad thing (and if they were truly in the ICU, we'd call and not text). The ICU database is a system we've used over the last couple of years to help students make sure they get their work turned in. Students that are missing work are added to the list and parents are sent texts and emails letting them know. Even students that are absent are sometimes added to the list just to let parents know. Most of the time, you can find the assignment attached to the email so you can make sure you student gets the work to turn in.

Our goal is to make sure that EVERY student turns in EVERY assignment, If they don't have an assignment, then our "lifeguards" check in with them to see what they need. Sometimes it's as simple as "I finished it last night and need to turn it in". At other times, the kids struggle with the assignment, so we offer the help they need to get it done.

I'll reiterate. Being on the ICU list is not a bad thing (at least not from a school perspective.......that may be different at home if your student isn't turning in their assignments). If you have questions about how ICU works, please let me know.

CMS Academic Update

We've started a new thing at CMS. I have some "tweeking" to do to help make it more concise, but this is a start. The kids did this without any preparation and did a fabulous job. Be watching for weekly "Academic Updates". If you have suggestions on what I can do differently, please let me know.

A Dose of Reality Program

On Wednesday, we'll have a great program for our students at CMS. If you want to see more info about the presenter and her program, check out link below. I think it's important to tell you that this program is being presented at no cost to CMS or to CISD. Linda Dutil, the presenter, is funded by community groups from all over the country. She was in our neck of the woods and reached out to me about making a presentation for our kids. If you would like to see the program on Wednesday, simply come to the office and sign in during the time that you would like to attend.
