Meet Our Counseling Practicum Student
Message from Our Counseling Practicum Student
Greetings!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. My name is Surmeet Gaba. I am a M.S. Ed. School Counseling graduate student from Northwest Missouri State University completing my practicum at Horace Mann School. I am working as a school counselor-in-training under the direction of my instructor Mrs. Veasey and on-site supervisor Mrs. Laura King.
My work with the students involves implementing the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program (MCSCP). According to this model, I address social/emotional, academic, and career development needs of all students by providing the following program components:
- · Curriculum includes implementing classroom lessons.
- · Responsive Services include, small group and individual counseling sessions.
- · Individual Planning activities involve implementing transition activities and assisting students in planning, monitoring, and managing their social/emotional, academic, and career development, and
- · System Support includes program, staff, and school support activities and services.
Large group and small group lessons are based on student needs and include topics such as social skills training, academic success and career exploration. Individual counseling sessions focus on students’ academic, career and social/emotional needs. For small groups and individual counseling sessions, students need parent/guardian consent and have the option NOT to participate or can opt out at any time. These students are randomly selected for my practicum experiences, which allow me to develop as a counselor-in-training as well as offer the opportunity for growth for these young learners.
If you have any concerns or questions regarding this, please contact Principal King at lmking@nwmissouri.edu or 660.562.1235.
Thank you,
Surmeet Gaba
