9th grade english writing
9th Grade English students just completed their Social Justice Editorial Writing assignment and presentation. This year, instead of just reading To Kill a Mockingbird, we added the option of reading Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy so that students could see more than one perspective of the same issue. These books, one fiction and one nonfiction, are connected by the theme topic of social justice, and we further connected the events in the books to both historical and modern-day events. Instead of just focusing on a book set in the 1930s and a book set in the 1980s, we wanted students to explore how many of these issues still exist today. Therefore, we asked students to choose a topic they felt strongly about and write an editorial expressing their opinion using data and research to back it up. Students ended their papers with a "call to action" in order to inspire others to effect change. In this unit, students read and annotated at least one text, took part in weekly socratic seminars to discuss the text, wrote responses to the text, learned how to effectively research a topic, and wrote a full 3-5 page editorial with MLA citations. The unit culminated in a midterm presentation to the class, either pre-recorded on FlipGrid or live in-person.

COVID update
Pooled testing was conducted again on Monday (1/24) and identified 8 cases of COVID in the building. As part of testing, we called students who were in a positive pool down to be retested. We notified families if their student tested positive. We have also notified teachers that students have the ability to make up work they miss while out of the building.
Returning after COVID
If you test positive for COVID and you are asymptomatic, you may come back on day six. The day you test positive for COVID is day 0. For example, if you get a positive test on Wednesday (day 0), you can return on the following Tuesday (day 6). See chart below.
If you are symptomatic and then you test positive, day 0 is the first day you start to develop symptoms.
If you test positive and develop symptoms AFTER your positive test, day 0 resets to the day you become symptomatic.
YOU CAN ONLY RETURN after 5 days of isolation if you were asymptomatic, OR if you are fever-free and your symptoms are resolving.
If you have COVID, you cannot be part of pool testing for 90 days from your positive test, as you may test positive for up to 12 weeks on a PCR test.
