Heavilin Reads: Because of Winn-Dixie

On Tuesday when students returned from Spring Break, each child was given a copy of the book Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCammillo and we are reading the book together as a whole school. Ask your children each night at dinner what India Opal and her dog, Winn-Dixie, are up to.. they have all sorts of adventures together as Winn-Dixie teaches others about how to accept and love themselves and others. When Heavilin Reads is over, the kids will bring their books home and we hope you can share together as a family and maybe even read it again.

Throughout the weeks of Heavilin Reads, we have all sorts of fun activities to do together. We started with a class scavenger hunt to find a puzzle piece to help reveal the cover of our book. Students have been bringing in pictures of their dogs to add to our "Stray Dog" wall display. We opened the book on Tuesday with a "prequel" movie, starring our very own Oliver. There will be a tree planting, a buddy class project, a service project for Lakeshore PAWS, and even a movie! Stay tuned for more information, and keep talking with your kids about the adventures of Winn-Dixie.

Bus Changes

The buses at Heavilin are quite full. We can no longer accommodate bus changes unless it is for emergency care purposes. No bus changes will be allowed for play dates, sleep overs, homework help, etc… In addition, we are no longer able to accept bus changes through a note to our school office. Please do not send notes that request we allow your child to ride a different bus for an evening. The only way to have a bus change approved is to contact the director of transportation directly and in advance. You can email Pat Hubbard at phubbard@valpo.k12.in.us (Boys & Girls Club transportation does not need special approval.)

As a side note: all other changes in dismissal still must be submitted as a written note to our office by the morning of the dismissal change. For example, if a student is going to be a car rider for one day, that must be a written note in the morning.

In other music news... Recently the 4th and 5th grade classes traveled to BFMS for some concerts presented by the VHS Orchestra and Band. The purpose of these concerts was to get our students excited about the opportunity to begin learning how to play a string instrument (4th graders) or a band instrument (5th graders).

4th graders will be receiving more information regarding the beginning orchestra program in the next few weeks. A parent/student meeting call out/sign up meeting will occur in May.

5th graders have the opportunity to give band instruments a try at TJMS on Saturday, April 7 from 9am-Noon or Monday, April 9 from 4pm-8pm. Come for as long as you'd like!
