Let’s Talk! with Mrs. VanAsten and Mrs. Heim, Speech-Language Pathologists
It was a pleasure to meet with so many of you during Parent-Teacher Conferences last month. The opportunity to meet and work together to support your child’s education is important to all of us! Thanks for taking the time from your job, family, or other commitments to chat.
As we enter the holiday season, we would like to focus on answering questions. As young children, we begin to answer questions with simply a word or two (“What is your name?” - “Katie”). As a student’s language skills grow, we can expect them to use more words and create more complex and complete sentences when responding to questions. This is a skill that will benefit them as they participate in classroom discussions, presentations, and even job interviews later in their lives. One way you might work on this skill at home is to have a family discussion centered around being “thankful”. Ask questions like “What are you thankful for? ...Who are you thankful for? ...Why are you thankful for that person/thing?” As adults, you can model the appropriate way to respond to questions. Begin by turning the question into a statement; (Who are you thankful for?) “I am thankful for my family….” and then provide one or more reasons to support you answer; “...because they love me and make me laugh.” Encourage your child to do the same when it is their turn to answer; provide them with some choices if they are struggling on their own.
What are WE thankful for? We are thankful for all the staff, students, and families of Meadowbrook Elementary school because they give us the opportunity to do what we love - help others become more effective communicators!
As a small gift to each family, we invite you to print off a copy of this Countdown to the Holidays, which gives you a great conversation starter for each day of the month of December. Take the opportunity at the dinner table or breakfast nook to engage with each other!
Best Wishes,
Mrs. Katie VanAsten
Mrs. Julie Heim

A note from your School Board Representative
Profile of a Graduate: Communication
A recent 2018 Job Outlook Survey found that only 41% of employers ranked current students as proficient in oral/written communications which is one reason why the HSSD believes communication is a critical element in the success of our students regardless of post high school graduation plans. Communication is an important component of our District Profile of a Graduate.
