News from Mrs. Drudy's Class
We exist so children can excel.
The Week at a Glance
For the next couple of weeks we will be deviating a bit from our normal language arts routines. We will be focusing on stories with holiday themes rather than the stories in our reading textbook series. Similarly, our spelling lists will take on a holiday feel.

Holiday Writings
The holidays have provided many opportunities for writing. We have been working hard all year with effectively expressing our opinions in writing, so writing about our preferences for Christmas trees--real or fake--came easily. Ask your child how the acronym O.R.E.O. can help us guide our opinion writing. This activity addresses the following academic standard:
- "Write a logically connected paragraph or paragraphs that introduce an opinion, with a concluding statement or section and multiple reasons to explain why a certain course of action should be followed."
Additionally, after reading Olive, the Other Reindeer, students were tasked with writing a persuasive application for why (s)he would make a good reindeer on Santa's team. Look for this darling piece of writing to come home soon. For now, it's proudly on display in the hallway for all to see.
Math: Measurement
We have had a big time measuring just about everything! Second grade students are expected to know the following with regard to length:
· "Measure & estimate length to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter and meter.
· Describe the relationships among inch, foot, and yard and between centimeter and meter.
· Describe which unit of length is most appropriate in a given situation."
Be sure to ask your child about his or her "Create-A-Tree" measuring project that is proudly on display in the hallway.
Interestingly, another component of measurement that we've begun focusing on is counting coins. This is an easy skill for you to practice at home. We do this on a daily basis, too, so many students are already quite proficient with the following standards that they are expected to master:
- "Find the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars."
Remember, if your child has not yet passed the 2 1/2-minute timing for addition, then he or she should consider this nightly homework!
Grinch for Good Food Drive
Our entire student body is invited to practice the LifeSkill of caring in an IMPACTful way. Starting Monday, the LES student council IMPACT ambassadors are going to be launching our #grinchforgood food drive. All items will be donated to our local food pantry. You can participate by bringing in non-perishable food items each day to help the more than 12 million hungry children who are hungry in our country. At the same time, you can help The Grinch grow his heart three sizes.
Now, are you ready for the best part? I--as the student council sponsor--have agreed to take a pie to the face if we are able to collect 250 items. Mrs. Sourbeer also said she would do the same if we can collect 500 items. Finally…the big boss, Superintendent Winchell has agreed take a pie to his face if we meet our final goal of 1,000 items!!!! Thank you, in advance, for considering supporting this worthwhile service learning project.
All Aboard for Christmas Around the World
With passports and suitcases in tow, the students are learning about the traditions and customs of countries around the world. This in depth study unit addresses the following Indiana Academic Social Studies Standards:
·" Identify and describe celebrations, symbols, and traditions and explain why they are important.
· Describe how people of different ages, cultural backgrounds, and traditions contribute to the community and how all citizens can respect these differences.
· The World in Spatial Terms: Use a compass rose to identify cardinal and intermediate directions and to locate places on maps."
Candy Bar Exchange
Don't forget: On the last day before Christmas break, December 21, we will be doing a candy bar exchange. If you wish for your child to participate, please bring in an unwrapped king-sized candy bar on or before this day. (When I say "unwrapped," that does not mean I want you to take the candy bar's wrapper off, I simply mean you do not need to cover it with gift wrap.) We will be having a little creative fun with the exchange that day. As always, thank you for making our learning a fun and inviting activity!

Christmas Wish: If you could make one wish for someone else, what would it be? Who would the wish be for and why? Consider things that money can’t do. Anything is possible with this wish. Give it some thought.
