Dear Mason Families,
Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful weather outside today! This weekend, I had the opportunity to spend part of my Saturday at the Kids Coalition Against Hunger event at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church with several of our staff members and families. It was an amazing event and we were able to prepare food that will eventually be sent to people in need all over the world. My son and I left the event feeling like we really were able to make a very small contribution to making the world a better place.
One of my favorite books of all time is called The Dot. The book talks about the power of making your mark on the world! We have to continue to put our learners in the position to see greatness in themselves and this book shows how a teacher was able to make that happen for one of her learners. At Mason, we strive to make sure our learners know that they don’t need to wait until they become an adult to be a leader! Please click on the link below and take the next three minutes and forty-five seconds to enjoy one of my favorite books. I would love for your child(ren) to send me the title of their favorite book via email and maybe it will be featured in one of our future Mason Gazettes. A short blurb explaining why it is their favorite book would also be greatly appreciated!
Have a Spectacular Sunday!

March 10th: Election Day Lunch/Building Procedures- All but one GPPSS school (North High School) are polling places and will be utilized Tuesday, March 10 for the primary election. Unlike the November election, this is a school day for students.
We will have a district representative stationed at the front door to assist with voter traffic and help monitor people entering and exiting the building. The district will also be providing us with a security guard to support the additional visitors. I will also be moving my office to the main hallway for the entire day to help with traffic as well. Lunch for all grade levels will be held upstairs in the hallway due to the gym being used by voters. Please do not send items that need to be microwaved with your child for lunch Tuesday as they will not have access to them. It takes a village to support our learners and we appreciate your support.
A Boy Called Bat! We really hope you and your family are enjoying the conversations that are being sparked by our One Book One School selection this year! Feel free to have your child read each chapter with our awesome staff! Click Here to read with the Mason Staff!

Are you helping your child deal with frustration?
Today’s students don’t always have the skills to cope with life’s minor hassles. Are you helping your child learn to deal with frustration? Respond yes or no to each statement:
- I understand that it isn’t my job to protect my child from all of life’s ups and downs.
- I encourage my child to keep trying when she gets stuck on a homework problem. I ask questions to help her find solutions.
- I help my child link her effort to success. Sometimes I say, “It isn’t supposed to be easy. But you’ll get it if you stick with it.”
- I point out real-life stories of successful people who have overcome challenges.
- I put my child’s feelings into words. “You’re frustrated that learning this science concept is taking longer than you hoped. You’ll get there.”
If most of your responses are yes, you are giving your child opportunities to work through her frustration. For each no, try that idea in the quiz.

Parking Lot Reminders
Double Parking
We know the parking lot gets very bust in the morning and afternoon. However, there is no double parking. You may NOT stand or park next to another vehicle to load/unload passengers. This not only endangers your child, but also seriously impedes the traffic flow. Your vehicle may be reported to the public works department and be issued a $175.00 fine.Parking in a Fire Route
The fire route includes the entrancement drive from Vernier Rd. along the sidewalks leading to the main doors. Parking here could result in a $50 fine.
Please be patient, careful and kind in the parking lot.

GPPSS Prepared For Coronavirus Response
While there have been no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) reported in Michigan as of February 20, GPPSS is closely following updates to the guidance issued by the Wayne County Health Department, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is currently reporting 13 confirmed cases nationwide. Therefore, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time. Additionally, there are no recommendations by federal, state or local public health officials to cancel events or restrict travel within the United States. The CDC is recommending avoiding nonessential travel to China. Traveler updates are available at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/warning/novel-coronavirus-wuhan-china. For up-to-date information on coronavirus visit www.michigan.gov/coronavirus
To prevent the spread of viruses such as the flu, common cold and coronavirus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizer
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing
- Avoid contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
