March Madness STEM
Thursday, March 29th, 2018
Our next STEM project will March Madness themed. The kids challenge is to build a catapult that will shoot a ping pong ball into a goal. Children will work in a small group of 2 to 3 children in order to build their basketball shooter they may use any of the materials listed below:
• 10 large popsicle sticks
• 4 rubber bands
• 1 small plastic condiment container, bottle cap, or the
bottom half of a Dixie Cup
• 1 ping pong ball
• tape (1 small piece to attach the plastic container to a popsicle stick)
In order to successfully complete the challenge their basketball shooter must launch the ball into the basket. Children will test their design and make changes to improve it if needed.
Children will work on this task during our math block (12:30 - 1:15) and our science block (2:00 - 2:55) as time as needed.
K-2-ETS1-1 Engineering Design
Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a
situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can
be solved through the development of a new or improved object or
tool.
K-2-ETS1-2 Engineering Design
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how
the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given
problem.
Please let me know if you would like to volunteer to help or can send in items. The only items we will need sent in will be: rubber bands, condiment containers, and 11 ping pong balls.
