Welcome Back!

Ms. Kirkland's English Class

Meet Your Teacher

Welcome to Fayette County High School! I will be your child's English teacher at Fayette County High School. I graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in English and Spanish, from Georgia State University with a Master's in Secondary English Education, and from Georgia Southern University with a Specialist degree in Teaching and Learning.

The information included in this newsletter will guide your student to helpful resources as well as steps to take to be successful in this course. The transition from middle school to high school can be difficult, but I am here to help you. During this transition, success is achieved through common effort of student, teacher, and parent. As you encounter questions starting and working through the course, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am here and available for each of you.

**At the very end of this newsletter, there is a form I need each parent to complete. Please do this at your earliest convenience**

**Familiarize Yourself with Infinite Campus

Infinite Campus is the online gradebook for students, parents, and teachers. This gradebook is kept in real time, so when a student or parent logs on to the system, he or she can view the student's actual grade as it appears in that moment. Users can also view whether an assignment is missing and if a student has received certain comments on assignments. Students and parents should check Infinite Campus daily in order to remain aware of grades. As soon as you see a falling grade, please contact me immediately at kirkland.mallory@mail.fcboe.org or schedule a conference through the guidance office by calling 770-460-3540, so we can create a plan of action. The videos below provide instructions for using Infinite Campus for both students and parents.

**There are also Iphone and Android Apps for Infinite Campus--email me if you would like videos for these**

*Familiarize Yourself with the Late Work Policy

All students will follow the same late work policy. Late work IS accepted, but in order to submit late work, the students must make a morning appointment before 8:15 in order to sit down with me and discuss/submit the assignment. Also, assignments submitted late will receive 10 points off for every day the assignment is late from the score given after the assignment is graded. Once a unit is over, no late work from that unit can be submitted and once 10 days have passed, the student will receive a zero on the assignment.

*Email me!

Email, email, email! I am SUPER fast with email, so feel free to email me at any time of day or night. I will get back to you within 24 hours of contact. Email is definitely the quickest way to reach me (I coach Cross Country), but if we need to schedule a phone call, that can be arranged. You will occasionally received Infinite Campus message blasts from me regarding your student's grade. If you receive these, make sure to reply to my actual email address and not the message. If you reply to the message, I will not receive it because it will not come to my email address. My email address is kirkland.mallory@mail.fcboe.org

*Call or Text Me!

Feel free to call or text me until 8:00 P.M.! I go to bed really early, so please respect these hours. Texting will be faster than calling--I check my voicemails each evening, and I will get back to you within 24 hours of you making contact. If you text or email, I will get back to you within the hour in MOST circumstances. The number to reach me is 770-299-9441. If you do call, please leave a voicemail.

*Automated Voice Calls From Me

You will occasionally receive automated updates from me regarding your child's grade. I apologize for the automation, but this is the quickest way to reach parents regarding student grades. Please listen to these message blasts in order to stay informed about your child's grade.

*Follow the Class Updates on Twitter

I will regularly update Twitter with due dates and reminders. Follow the class @KirklandEnglish. DO NOT WORRY! I will not request to follow you unless you request that I do so! This is strictly for you to have reminders about the course. For 9th grade, all reminders, etc. will be followed by #Kirkland9th, and for 12th grade, all reminders, etc. will be followed by #Kirkland12th. Parents, if you have a Twitter account, feel free to also follow the course!

*Receive Text Updates about the Course

I use Remind 101 to also send out reminders to students about assignments, due dates, and class locations. This is helpful for students and parents who do not have Twitter. This app does not give me your phone number, and you cannot respond to this phone number. It is simply for me to send out blasts. If you try to respond to the Remind 101 number, I will not receive the message. Please use the number above to call or text.
