WM Kindergarten Curriculum Update
February 2019
Reading and Writing
Reading
We will wrap up the Bigger Books, Bigger Muscles unit as we give our super powers extra strength. We will celebrate by sharing a book with a friend using our best reading voices! We will then begin our next unit on Becoming Avid Readers. Avid Readers are readers who love reading so much, they can hardly bear to stop reading! In this unit we will learn what avid readers do and how we can all become avid readers!
Writing
February will begin our persuasive writing unit. We will begin the unit by making signs, songs, and letters about problems they see in our classrooms and our school called “Making Our School a Better Place.” They will learn how to use their writing to convince others to agree with them. We will then discuss bigger problems they see in their neighborhoods and their larger world!
Math
In Unit 6 we will be talking about 3D shapes, naming the attributes and sorting similarities and differences. We will build these shapes with polydrons. Next we will explore numbers in the teens, by thinking of 11-20 as 10 and some more. Then we will be making combinations of numbers that equal ten. For number corner we count and compare sets of dots, collect pennies and nickels, solve story problems using unifix cubes, practice 10 and some more on the number line and celebrate the 100th day of school!
Science
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will learn how to be good helpers at school. Through a series of Social Studies Skill Builder activities, they will learn and practice four ways to be “handy helpers.” We will be celebrating Kindness Week Feb. 11th- Feb. 15th. A 4th grade student from Pride Pack will be reading a book focused on Kindness in our classrooms and a Mix-It Up Lunch will take place on Friday. Students will get a table color to sit at and will sit with classmates they might typically not sit with.
We will also be exploring activities related to Presidents’ Day.
LMC - Library
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: (continued from January) The Carnival of the Animals and musical opposites (loud and soft, short and long, fast and slow)
Miss Soltis’ classes will be studying the difference between piano (quiet) and forte (loud). We will practice by playing, singing, moving, and aurally identifying the differences.
Technology
Students are independently practicing logging into a computer with their unique username and password. Students are learning features of the computer program KidPix 3D, which is a creativity software for drawing and painting.
Art
How do you tell a story through art? How can you talk about art? How are artists problem-solvers? How do you express feelings through art? (Rousseau’s Tigers, Sun Faces)
