2019-2020, Issue #12: March 2
Dear KAS Families,
We thank you again for your support and cooperation with our enhanced safety procedures. As we resume some normal routines, it is important that we remain careful and evermore vigilant to protect the safety of our students and community. Full information about the steps we continue to take is available at www.kas.tw/health-update.
The AIT maintains a page with useful information about travel restrictions here: https://www.ait.org.tw/covid-19-information/. As a reminder, all KAS faculty, staff, and students must follow any relevant quarantine and ‘self health management’ regulations at all times. To further ensure student safety, we will be requiring an updated travel questionnaire from all students upon return from spring break.
In high school, we would like to remind parents to talk with their children about ensuring that they are caught up with their work from Digital Days. For those students who are still significantly behind, they may be assigned to our After School Academic Program each day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until they are caught up.
Parents of seniors, we have scheduled the seniors’ photo shoot on Wednesday, March 25. Although this is parent teacher conference day, we did not want to take seniors out of another day of class for this event. It is a fun day for seniors as this is the first time they are able to try on their caps and gowns and think about their coming graduation! Please help us in ensuring that all seniors come to school that day. More information will come from Mr. Pilon, our Yearbook teacher, on the schedule, etc.
Please remember the deadline for the school year 2020-21 registration fee is March 15. Invoices have already been sent out. Please contact our business office if you have not received one yet. This deadline is important for securing students’ places for next year.

Dear KAS MS Families:
The most important event in March at KAS Middle School is Student Led Parent Conferences on March 25, 2020. There are a few goals for this day:
Students take responsibility for their own learning and achievement.
Parents gain a deeper understanding of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program and what students are learning in school.
Parents have the opportunity to connect with their child’s teachers for 1:1 conversations
100% participation by students and families
Please look out for email communication in the next two weeks on signing up for Student Led Conferences and individual parent-teacher appointments.
As always, it is an honor to serve this community of families and educators,
Mr. Payne, Middle School Principal 國中校長
For parents of Seniors:
KAS 12th grade students will be taking mock exams the week of March 9 through March 13; and then IB and AP exams May 1 - May 21. These final months of school can be stressful for our students. How can you, their parents, help them to do their best and finish high school on a positive note?
Many of our students are taking many long, grueling and consequential exams. IB exams and AP exams can last as long as 3¾ hours at one sitting. Many of our students are sitting for as many as 13 testing sessions. It is important over the next three months for students to plan ahead for the tests, to study for the exams beginning now, rather than waiting until the week of the exams. “Cramming,” the practice of staying up very late to study for an exam the next day, is not effective and creates tired, cranky students. Something as simple as making a list of all tasks to be done, and then prioritizing and checking each task off as it is completed can bring order and peace of mind to an overwhelmed student. Good sleep, a good diet, and regular exercise can help students remain attentive and alert, and healthy.
Staying positive is important. The work has been done; now it is time to see the results. Help your child look forward to the exams and to remember all the hard work and preparation already accomplished.
Many of our 12th grade students will soon be facing huge transitions in their lives. School as they have known it for many years is about to end. Many will be moving to new countries, separating from their families, friends, and culture. There are often unspoken fears, worries about how things will go in a different life. Help your children to navigate this final phase of high school so they can move gracefully into the next phase of their lives.

A Waiting Period
As if the last 12 months havent been stressful enough for all the seniors and their parents, they are all still awaiting the final decisions from the colleges. Sometimes this can be the most frustrating part but do not fear; the end is near. This month, most of the University of California schools will render their decisions. All other US colleges must divulge their decisions by April 1 and the students have until May 1 to declare their choice of college they will attend. In order to complete their application, we must know which college they will attend in order to send their final documents. Please make sure you update CIALFO decisions online so your counselors can keep track of them.
As we have also mentioned before, it is an important time for students to be reading their email or checking in to the university portals on a regular basis so as not to miss anything. Best advice…..assume nothing!
Grade 11 Parent Meeting
We will be holding a grade 11 parent meeting for your information about the college process however given the situation with the virus, we have held off on it for now. We will be in a better position to schedule it as the days go by and you will be notified of the time and place. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don't hesitate to call Ms. Newman or Mr. Bishop at the school. Thank you for your patience.
