2nd Grade Happenings
December 1, 2016
1 week left in the 1st Trimester and 2 weeks of school left for 2016! Time sure has gone by fast for the first part of the school year. Each day I am blessed with a class that keeps me on my toes and always challenges me to make sure I ensure that everyone reaches their full potential. The next two weeks are busy, but full of a lot of fun events. Make sure you check in with your child over these weeks about all that they have done!
God's Time
Our current focus during God's Time is the Commandments. We learned that the Great Commandment is "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.". Then we started focusing on the first 3 of the 10 Commandments. To help us with these we have started watching a series of videos to understand these in 2nd grade language.
Social Studies
This week we started a new unit in Social Studies titled "Our Government". In this chapter some of the topics we will cover are:
- People follow laws made by their governments
- Towns and cities have their own governments
- Americans choose their leaders
- Every state has its own government
- Our country's government has worked well for more than two hundred years
- Americans show their patriotism in many ways
- We can learn from people who have been good citizens
Some great discussion points from our lessons this week are:
- Do your parents or grandparents remember voting at a polling place instead of just the mail-in ballot like we have now?
- Have your parents ever been called for Jury Duty?
- What are some government services that our city should spend our tax money on? (ex: schools, libraries, parks, fire, police, etc...)
Math
We finished our chapter on 3-digit subtraction. During the next two weeks, we will reviewing both 3-digit addition and subtraction through various activities. After Christmas break we will be focusing on story problems. We will be solving them using "bar models". Stay tuned after break about this topic!
