Hearts for Hope

a fundraiser to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital

Meet Sydney

On May 23, 2016, at the age of one, she was diagnosed with a type of cancer known as Wilms Tumor in both kidneys. The tumors were doubling in size every 48 hours, and her family’s first prayer was answered when her doctors began chemotherapy only two days after her diagnosis. She continued to receive chemo until July, when she had her first surgery.

Her Surgeries

Dr. Davidoff at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was able to save 30% of Sydney’s left kidney during her first operation. He pioneered the procedure that gave Sydney a chance at life.

Sydney continued to receive chemotherapy in her hometown, returning to St. Jude’s in September of 2016 for another operation. One day prior to the procedure, Sydney’s parents, Diana and Chris, were told that she may have to lose her entire right kidney.

During Sydney’s second surgery, Dr. Davidoff found that she had two extra parts in her right kidney! With an extra artery to the lower part of her kidney and an extra vein, the doctor was able to save 30% of her right kidney as well!

Another Chapter

Sydney has turned two this month, and is CANCER-FREE, thanks to the prayers of friends at home and around the world. God has used St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to give Sydney a chance at life.

Sydney’s story is close to our hearts, because Sydney is the youngest grandchild of Gateway’s beloved PE Teacher, Mrs. Evelyn Duncan. We rejoice with Evelyn in Sydney’s life and restored health!

At the beginning of this school year, our Principal, Mrs. Stubley, challenged each Gateway team to perform an act of community outreach, and the Related Arts team has chosen to give back to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, an organization that has given so many children another chapter in the face of life-threatening illnesses like Sydney’s.

We invite all students, parents, family members, and members of the community at large to join us...
